<text>This page of Amazing Heroes (issue 181) begins Darwin McPherson’s article, “Inside Studio Proteus: a Talk with Toren Smith.” In the interview, McPherson and Toren discuss Toren’s work and interests, particularly Toren’s comic production strategies and the manga and comics in which he is interested. Toren mentions, for one, that he has little to no interest in publishing comics himself -- His interests are in production and, though he does not wish to enter into a business situation, writing. In fact, Toren finds publishing to be a boring process. When asked about superheroes, a common general theme of the fanzine series, Toren revealed that he thinks that a lot of interesting things can be done with superhero comics, though he does not read them much (particularly not the mainstream ones). Toren does explain, though, that he finds origin stories important, even if the first one is not up to the highest standards (as long as the story after is well written, drawn, and produced), and the two briefly discuss Japanese superhero comics. Also mentioned is the language barrier that comes from reading manga as someone who struggles with reading Japanese (though Toren likes to read in both Japanese and English), along with the sentiment that reading in English is more relaxing for Toren for this reason.

A conclusion to be drawn from this discussion is the change in content through translation. With anime and manga becoming more popular in the United States, translation forms and production teams like that of Toren are important to consider. What is not discussed in the interview, however, is the extent to which the translation of Japanese manga can become problematic. Though Studio Proteus is a production company, many fans (such as the audience to which Amazing Heroes is addressed) of manga perform scanlation or fan translations, which they then redistribute online for free. While this action is not inherently problematic (with capitalist ethics and copyright laws aside), it does raise questions of who translates the work. There are many ways in which the translation can go awry, especially without cultural awareness of Japan, While there are techniques for comics’ translation in existence (such as Klaus Kaindl’s typology), these are not exactly applicable to scanlations. Essentially, the question of cultural awareness is a big one in translation, especially for content that is being translated for consumption by a country that has historically either stereotyped and defamed or exoticized and commodified the culture of the language being translated. With the shift from Japanese manga from the comics category (as it appears to be a part of at the time of this publication) to the book genre, the works become less exclusive. They are no longer hidden within an exclusive community, and their accessibility has aided their popularity. Since genres guide interpretation, though, and fans have become more involved in the culture, translations have likely shifted as well.</text>

Toren!” (an interview) by Darwin McPherson, “Moon-Knighting” (an interview) by Steven Miller, “Ten of a Kind” by Robert T. Jeschonek, “Perspective” by Joe Filice, comics news, “Coming Distractions,” “Backstage” by Andy Mangels (featuring a review of the latest Spider-Man script), “Cartoon Corner” by Korkis & Cawley, “Small Press World” (an interview) by Hal Hargit, “Infernal Gall” by Adam-Troy Castro, Comics in Review, comments from readers, “The Cartoonist,” and “Storm’s Index” by Dave Storm. “Toren! Toren! Toren!” is an interview with Toren Smith of Studio Proteus about Venus Wars and translation issues in manga. “Moon-Knighting,” on the other hand, is an interview with Sal Velluto, the artist of Moon Knight. “Ten of a Kind” is a guide to ten of the greatest stories from Star Trek Enterprise’s missions, and “Perspective” looks at comic conventions. This issue’s edition of “Cartoon Corner” provides a history of the popular cartoon The Simpsons. “Small Press World” is an interview with Michael Dowers, publisher of Starhead Comix and Fantagraphics’ own warehouse manager. Adam-Troy Castro proposes an ecological challenge to comics while defining what is a superhero in “Infernal Gall.” The right-hand side of the second page features staff information, contributor’s information, an index to advertisers, ad rates (a full-page ad is $150) and distributors.

Though many of the earlier issues of Amazing Heroes contained information and articles about film and cartoons, this issue seems to move beyond film and cartoons that only relate directly to superheroes, even including a piece on The Simpsons. Despite television’s growing popularity in the 1950s, previous issues of Amazing Heroes from the early 1980s hardly seem to focus on it. This issue’s presentation displays the growing connections between comics and cartoons, furthered more by the connections discussed concerning Japanese manga and anime. Strict regulations were placed on comics in 1954, beginning a push towards television as a popular medium for youth culture entertainment. As a result of the comics recession, fewer youths had strong nostalgic value to place on comics, and television became another industry for superheroes to populate from which creators could profit. Similarly, a change in popularity of Japanese culture arose, and this fan magazine's emphasis on Studio Proteus exemplifies this new fixation. Published only a couple of years after Japanese manga’s emerging production and six years before the manga medium’s American peak in 1996, this issue anticipates one of the major production groups of the manga movement. Studio Proteus, often associated with their work on cyberpunk pieces such as Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell (the latter of which was released post-publication of this Amazing Heroes issue), follow trends set by those in the Japanese comics genre (such as Akira) before culture re-classified Japanese manga as books instead.</text>

<text>The cover of Amazing Heroes issue 181 is minimalistic. At the bottom left is a list of comics Studio Proteus produced, including Appleseed, Outlanders, Dirty Pair, What’s Michael, and Venus Wars. Below this is a preview for BACKSTAGE, alerting readers of a monthly occurrence. The cover art, from Venus Wars, was illustrated by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. It features a simple white background with an Ishtar Octopus tank in the top middle section, aiming forward. This black metallic tank has an operational weight of 110 tons. Two people are seen at a diagonal in the foreground with their heads in the middle of the page and their legs slanting to the bottom right. The person in the front, Ken, wears a racing jumpsuit, has black hair, and holds a helmet as he runs forward with an intense and focused expression. Ken’s jacket and helmet are both marked with the number 07. The person behind Ken, Maggie, is dressed in a gray short skirt, red shirt, a sleeveless jacket, and a helmet with two white, pointy protrusions and large eyes. Maggie appears startled, her mouth agape. Amazing Heroes text is found at the top right in a matte red. The issue number, date (July 1990), and price (in USD and CAN) are above it in small black font.

One of the issue’s primary foci is Studio Proteus, a company that has brought Japanese comics to English speaking audiences since 1987. They have produced most of Penthouse’s and, perhaps more popularly, Dark Horse’s manga comics (as well as animated works) and a substantial selection of hentai works. Studio Proteus has been and continues to be relatively influential in the transition of manga and anime from Japan to America (linguistically, from Japanese to English). Venus Wars, featured on this cover, was among the works produced in English by Studio Proteus in 1993. Though not necessarily the most popular of Studio Proteus’s productions, Venus Wars fits well within the Amazing Heroes realm, starring a team of eight combat bikers actively defending and attempting to liberate their home on Venus, Aphrodia, from Istar invaders, like heroes of the space-road. The issue itself was published at a time after which the problematic American hatred of Japanese individuals and groups had spiked. Reception of these translations likely would have differed greatly if they had come too much earlier in the century, as comic books (specifically superhero comics) maintained and promoted a pro-social moral disposition during their origination. Hatred for the Japanese, particularly, manifested strongly during World War II, especially following Pearl Harbor day, leading to racist and hostile representations of the Japanese in American comics and American culture (though these negative depictions could be seen in comics as early as 1939). However, as these tensions changed, Western (infantilizing and problematic, as discussed in Edward Said’s Orientalism) fascination with Eastern cultures latched onto the medium. One of the early emergences of cyberpunk, Appleseed was produced by Studio Proteus in the same year Epic Comics (Marvel) produced an English Akira, adapted into a film traditionally known as one of the most historic anime films released in the United States. </text>

The featured articles' table of contents lines are further explained by an art panel above each, the foremost a photograph of the actress portraying Supergirl in the movie, the latter two relevant clips of comic panels. The other articles listed include an editorial about Star Wars, Star Hawks, and more by Dave Olbrich, a mini-epic of Star Wars by Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson, newsflashes and comics previews by J. Collier, an examination of Carol Danvers by R.A. Jones, a look at Marvel's heroines by Thomas Long, a review of Wonder Woman by Lon M. Rovner, comic reviews by R.A. Jones, and a section of write-ins from readers. The date of publication (October 1, 1984) can be found in the upper right corner of the page.

The culture surrounding these comics is contradictorily encapsulated by both second-wave feminism and by a resistance to feminism altogether. Whereas this issue’s superheroine focus displays an appreciation for attempts to be inclusive and representative, the superhero comics and films (and fan responses to the comics/films) are still lacking in female diversity and in racial representation, sometimes maintaining hegemonic white feminism at the expense of multiracial or intersectional feminism. According to historian and critic Jennifer K. Stuller, female superheroes are often differentiated from male superheroes on the three premises of collaboration, love, and mentorship. This construction places limits on female heroes that are not prevalent in the same ways for male heroes, often reinforcing harmful stereotypes and limiting the superhero genre overall. One of the ways in which this is true can be seen through one of the works featured in this issue; in the Supergirl film of 1984, Supergirl is mentored by a man named Peter O’Toole (who has more influence over her than even her parents). Rather than being mentored by other women, many of the instances of mentorship (which is common for female superheroes) involve men leading women, making female superheroes subordinate to a male higher in the manufactured hierarchy. A review of the film published shortly after the film’s release in 1984 highlights the aforementioned three premises in explaining aspects of the film related to the heroine herself, depicting Supergirl’s mentorship and companionship with O’Toole and her love with Ethan. Though Supergirl was somewhat of an attempt to reach young female readers (in which it arguably succeeded), the representation aligns best, still, with the second wave feminism frequently associated with the time period. </text>

<text>The cover of issue number 56 of the Amazing Heroes fanzine series, illustrated by Kevin Nowlan, features prominent female superheroes soaring across a forest green backdrop, some angled up, some down, and some flying fairly horizontally. The heroines appear to be flying from the left of the page to the right as a pack. Among those included in flight are DC Comics' Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl, Wonder Girl, Power Girl, and Supergirl as well as Marvel Comics Group's Ms. Marvel, Storm, and Spider-Woman. Supergirl secures the foreground, illustrated to be the largest as well as the most centered on the page, while Wonder Woman flies slightly behind her, more isolated than the rest of the heroines. Supergirl's gaze seems to be transfixed on the viewer, and Wonder Woman appears to be glancing at Supergirl, but the others seem to be looking forward in the direction in which they are flying. The other heroines are pictured below Wonder Woman and Supergirl. Yellow “Amazing Heroes” text rests in bold at the top of the page. The cover promises to be a “Special Superheroines Issue” that previews Jonni Thunder and the Supergirl movie and presents a “heroine history” of Ms. Marvel, Wonder Woman, and more.

This issue was published at a time in which the heroines described were mostly well-established in mainstream comics (many of them having emerged in the 1970s), and though comics have consistently lacked female representation (especially positive female representation), there is (and was) clearly an audience for comics and other superhero content for women, by women, and/or about women. Heroes like Wonder Woman, for example, became identified with the feminist movement, providing a role model for young women and girls and reflecting an emphasis on female power. However, Wonder Woman does not address many concerns of what would now be considered third wave feminism. Much of the superhero content during the time of this issue’s publication (in the 1980s), including Wonder Woman, lacked an emphasis on intersectionality, neglecting to accurately and diversely represent Black women, Latina women, LGBTQ+ people, and other intersectional minorities, frequently using oppressed minorities as a tool for displaying the heroes’ dedication to saving the “less fortunate.” Occasionally, though, some progressive ideology would arise (even if it was not exactly ideal), like with Wonder Woman’s activism or with Storm’s inclusion in the X-Men. However, even though most Marvel teams had at least one female member, the female members were always subordinate to the team’s male heroes, and many comics of the time (Wonder Woman included) reinforced racism. This white, hegemonic feminism was distributed commonly among not just comics, but also films, novels, shows, and the news during this time. Second wave feminism led to the media that praises these hegemonies (creators pander to fans’ cultural values) while the media further support the movement (fans learn about these movements through their favorite pieces). </text>

<text>This representative page of issue 5 of the Amazing Heroes fanzine series relates to the issue’s focus on Ka-Zar. It is the first page of Michael Catron’s article, “Exploring Ka-Zar’s Brave New World” (some of the text is cut off because it spans over two pages). In the illustration that completely covers the first page of its two-page spread, a large group of people enters a massive cave, one individual (presumably Ka-Zar) holding a torch high above their head. The dark cave descends into a pool of water at the bottom of a curved staircase. Stalagmites and Stalactites cover the landscape of the cave, causing it to appear more grand and treacherous. The article itself explores Marvel’s reinvention of the hero Ka-Zar and Marvel’s risk-taking in the comics realm, citing the decision to sell Ka-Zar comics exclusively through comics shops (bypassing traditional newsstand distribution) as an example. In discussing the new Ka-Zar (spanning from page thirty-five to page forty-two), Catron provides an interview with Bruce Jones, the new writer, and Brent Anderson, the artist, as well as a very brief history of Ka-Zar, an analysis of the characters of the comics, a look into some of the changes involved, and an introduction of the new settings.

Here, Catron celebrates and criticizes the changes enacted for Ka-Zar comics, providing a fan’s perspective about the gradual transition of the state of comics from the bronze age to the modern age. With the new possibilities resulting from the prospect of direct marketing (allowing comic creators to bypass strict comic codes), creators and fans can move into the new age of comics. Anderson even claims that he wants more feedback and participation from fans, and Amazing Heroes reflects both feedback and participation; the fans have a chance to expand upon content creatively, critique superhero content, and share their ideas in a space specifically organized for them to do so, allowing for cultural and content production that arises from more than just the mainstream comic writers and artists. The exclusivity of comic book and superhero culture is still maintained, but the transfer of information through a purchasable magazine at least opens up the publically transformative realm to fans who may otherwise be unheard or unseen, additionally opening up communication between fans. Fanzines such as Amazing Heroes are also able to introduce critical conversations to the public about content that does not usually receive recognition, like the abundantly available yet lesser discussed works surrounding Ka-Zar, even allowing readers to interact with their favorite content creators through the interviews they conduct. Because the fanzines are not a physical space that people must occupy to participate in, they can be an initial stage in a new fan’s process to more thoroughly understanding fan culture and the comic subjects in which they are interested. Overall, the Amazing Heroes fanzine series provides a look back into the fandom landscape of superhero production and reception of the past, acting as a tool for the progression of fan studies and content reinvention.

<text>Published in October of 1981 in Stamford, Connecticut, the table of contents of issue number 5 of the Amazing Heroes series contains the page numbers for nine articles, including a “letters from our readers” section, a Star Wars adventure by Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson, a comics report by Michael Catron, a “silly cover” by Brian James Reidel, a new comics checklist, “Exploring Ka-Zar’s Brave New World” by Michael Catron (an article), “Shackled by Success” by David M. Singer (another article), a reminiscence of Spider-Man by Bob Sodaro, and a Star Hawks adventure by Mark Lamport. The executive editor of the issue is Michael Catron, and the art director is Peppy White. The contributing artists include Willie Blyberg, Rudi Franke, Mark Lamport, Mark Heike, Sam de la Rosa, Jim McGreal, Mike O’Neil, Dan Reed, Brian James Reidel, and Brent Anderson. There are several small depictions of characters such as Darth Vader, Spider-Man, and Ka-Zar on the right of the contents in fine black ink. The page also lists the magazine issue’s advertisers, being Amazing Heroes, Comic Art Workshop, Elfquest Gatherum, Forbidden Planet, Joseph and Peter Koch, Marvel Comics, Nautilus Dreams, Pacific Comics, and Sea Gate Distributors. Copyright information is listed.

Though less extensive than the later issues of Amazing Heroes, issue 5 still covers a fair amount of content. The magazine issue notably displays four key aspects of fandom inquiry, allowing fans to (indirectly and, albeit, more slowly than later issues) communicate with each other (through content distribution and the “letters from our readers” section), to be creative (through the creative pieces published and shared in the fanzine), to display and share their knowledge (through the critical reviews and histories of the content of which they are fans, such as with the article “Exploring Ka-Zar’s Brave New World”), and to organize and develop power (by creating a magazine that organizes fan ideas and values for the consumption of other fans as well as comic writers and artists, giving fans a say in the content they consume, although this specific issue does lack a substantial cause for activism). The fans’ work is transformative; they contribute to the culture of the content of which they are fans. In the case of Ka-Zar, a less popular Marvel character, the fans bring awareness to the character’s changes near the intersection of the bronze age (around 1970 to the mid-1980s) and the modern age (around the mid-1980 to the present) of comics, marking a revolutionary period. Also during this critical transition, direct market distribution began to make bypassing the comics code authority more realistic, allowing for more freedom in the comics about which the authors in Amazing Heroes write. </text>

<text>This issue of Amazing Heroes, published in October of 1981, primarily features content about Ka-Zar, additionally containing fan letters and Star Wars adventures, a reminiscence of Spider-Man, and comics news. This cover page, illustrated by Brent Anderson, depicts the hero Ka-Zar kneeling before a lavishly dressed, standing man with a cape (named Belasco). The bearded Belasco additionally has a sword tied around his pelvis in front of him, pointing down, and purple tights on his legs. He stands tall above Ka-Zar, being elevated further by a platform under his boots, and his hand is held out and flexed menacingly. While Belasco's face is clearly visible, the long-haired Ka-Zar is facing away from the reader, gripping his own small weapon as he kneels, shirtless and bare-legged. His shadow appears in front of him, despite the implied light source of a fire at his anterior. This large yellow and red flame stretches, rising up the page, twisting on its way up and containing the words, “Ka-Zar goes to Hell!” The cover promises a look at Lee and Ditko’s Spider-Man and the return of the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. agents in addition to this feature story, but few other words are present on the page.

The creation of the Amazing Heroes fanzine in 1981 speaks to the state of fandoms at the time. As a print medium, these fanzines were not as easily circulated as the online media content of later years, creating an aura of exclusivity within some already elusive fandoms. For the fans to have this method of exchanging information with each other is empowering; with the creation of these fanzines, fans have the opportunities to participate in the works they appreciate and love. This is the beginning of fans’ cultural movement from the margins to the mainstream, giving fans a procedure for participating in a cultural production. While this particular issue exists at the boundary between the bronze age and the modern age, at the time of publication, the internet has not yet allowed for instantaneous communication between fans across far distances. However, Amazing Heroes allows for a form of collective expression and collective appreciation. This issue’s focus on Ka-Zar shows this collectivism for a hero that is far from Marvel’s most popular in the mainstream (despite his frequent usage). Ka-Zar could additionally serve as a symbol of the fans’ transformative use of existing source material by existing as a reworking of a previous story himself (especially when considering that Shanna, Ka-Zar’s wife, is a clear imitation of Sheena of the Jungle). </text>

<text>On the 14th page of Amazing Heroes issue # 118 is a series of articles organized in interesting patterns and all accompanied by an image. The text is organized into three columns, each of which is enclosed by a long rectangle. The heading for this section simply reads, “News,” in bold, capitalized text. The first article, spread between two columns that extend about ¾ down the page, is entitled “Japanimation at NOW: Astro Boy, Speed Racer comics on schedule,” and it explains that the rights to the phenomenally successful Japanese properties Astro Boy and Speed Racer have been acquired by the studio NOW Comics, who plan to adapt the series with modern, American-appropriate content. Every property title in the article is written in boldface and italics, while the names are written in all caps. In the lower left of the text is an image of a proud-looking Speed Racer with clenched fists and his helmet tucked into his elbow, while another image, captioned below as “A sample of NOW’s Astro Boy,” depicts the underwear-clad automaton boy escaping the clutches of a massive horned humanoid robot shouting “R!”. This picture is placed directly in the middle of the second column’s text.

On the right side of the page, nestled in the third column is the article, “Two comics to benefit literacy,” which concerns the release of Word Warriors and Quest For dream Lost, short black-and-white comics distributed by the Literacy Volunteers of Chicago and penned by a variety of artists and writers. Above the article’s title is a rectangular image just as wide as the column and of similar dimensions to the Astro Boy image earlier. It features medium shots of three grim-looking and realistically rendered people, a sharp-faced man with a popped collar and a wide-brimmed hat on the left, a woman with slick black hair and lipstick in the top-middle, and a gritty but generic-looking man in a button-down shirt on the right, all three of whom encircling an image of an incapacitated man lying face-down on some implied surface. This image is also extended past the bounds of the news rectangle, nearly overlapping the word “News” atop the stories. Educational comics are nothing new, however, since ambitious publishers have released series like Classics Illustrated as far back as the 1940s to use comics as a tool for imparting cherished literature. Still, using comics as a tool specifically for literacy is remarkable progressive, as its benefits continue to be studied and debated well into the 21st century.

The final article, a mere three sentences, is shown in the bottom right: “Elvis Presley Goes undercover at Mad Dog,” which discusses “Elvis: Undercover…a satirical one-shot by TOM (Splat!) MASON and DON (Captain Obese) LOMAX.” Accompanied by this brief explanation is an excerpted image, a detailed and stylized black and white portrait of a young Elvis, not even constrained by a rectangular border, but instead simply rising from the bottom of the page, his cutoff point just below his exposed collarbone.</text>

The top third of the page is occupied by an illustrated banner featuring a variety of comic characters from superhero books to newspapers, most of whom are engaging in friendly conversation. The front row of this menagerie includes Albert Alligator and Pogo Possum (from the newspaper strip Pogo), having a friendly chat with Mickey Mouse, while his own duck friend (very likely Donald Duck) is looking off to the right. Also in the front row is a surly Dick Tracy, mimicking his traditional pose with gun in hand, a ditzy woman with a large hairstyle and a surprised expression, and Hägar the Horrible, the cartoon Viking from his eponymous newspaper strip, staring happily at nothing in particular. In the row behind them, from right to left, are the head and creepily extended neck of a bespectacled hero, the grim visage and torso of Tor the savage, a distant Spider-Man with his web firing far above the page, a stoic and cheerful Superman, a distant flying hero enveloped in flames, and a very grumpy duo of Batman and the Hulk refusing to acknowledge the presence of a detailed, enormous, and hideous creature with a piggish face and an absurdly long snout resting his hands on their shoulders. Written on the left side is the caption, “Illustration by Gary Kwapisz,” and this group is huddled behind the large rectangle bearing the name, “Comics Report”.

Below this heading are three columns of text, but only two headlines. The first, “Tarzan and Magnus Artist Russ Manning Dead at 52,” describes the life of Russ Manning, born in 1929, exploring a 15-plus year career as an artist for Dell, and dead from cancer on December 1, 1981. His most well-remembered work is as the co-creator of Magnus, Robot Fighter along with editor Chase Craig, and as the artist for the Tarzan comics after 1965, replacing Jesse Marsh. Below these two columns of writing are two panels from Manning’s run of Tarzan, showing the lithe jungle dweller leaping in the first panel and running in the next, thinking to himself, “Too long have I adventured in strange lands! It is time I returned to the best land of all—home!...The Yeld! It never changes, no matter how long I have been away!” In the top left of the first panel is the credit “By Edgar Rice Burroughs,” and the bottom right of the second panel reads the barely legible, “Reg. U. S. Pat. Off. –All rights reserved ©1967 by United Feature Syndicate, Inc.”

The second article, written in the third and final column, is “Dr. Wertham Dead at 86,” a familiar name to veterans of the comics world. The article discusses his campaigning against the “often shockingly gruesome” comics of the era with his 1954 book Seduction of the Innocent, coupled with his stranger claims of homosexuality in Batman and comparison of Superman and Lee Harvey Oswald, which eventually led to the formation of the Comics Code Authority. Rather than demonizing him, though, the article ends with his statements rejecting the Comics Code and even the formation of viable relationships with members of the comics fandom.
