<text>The representative article from the forty-first issue of Amazing Heroes is one that describes the history of Superman in cinema. The top right-hand corner of the page shows a photograph of actor Kirk Alyn, the supposed “first on-screen Superman”, dressed in his iconic costume and looking away from the camera, coming out of some bushes. Below this, the title is written in the center of the page, in a very large font, reading: “ALL OUR SUPERMEN”. This is followed by three paragraphs outlining the origins of Superman on the big screen, setting it up by addressing the latest Superman flick, starring Christopher Reeve, Superman III. It dives into the controversy surrounding who the true “first” Superman was, and in later pages it talked about Superman in other mediums, like television cartoons and on Broadway. Below these three columns, the tagline is in italics and reads “The Man of Steel From Mayo Kaan to Chris Reeve”, with the following line giving us the author – “by Lynn Woolley”. On the lower left-hand side, the page number, 34, is written, and the right-hand side simply says “Amazing Heroes #41”. The entire page is in black and white, with two vertical lines encasing the entirety of the article.

Superman is one of the most well-known and iconic superheroes in the history of comic books. For many people, he is the first character to come to mind when they think of either comics or superheroes. His history, both within and outside of the pages of comic books, is detailed and complex. For many fans, his entire history was unknown; instead, they knew large snippets of his past or the more recent movies. Woolley’s article seeks to provide a comprehensive history of the non-comic book variants of the character, from his time on the Broadway stage to the newly-released Superman III. This thorough overview of the cinematic Superman is a great tool for informing readers, especially younger ones, of the history of this famed hero. It even addresses decades-old controversies, like who the first on-screen Superman was. However, this also paved the way for the popularization of “fanboy”/fandom culture, where fans are tested on their knowledge of their chosen fandom and gatekeeping is rampant. Amazing Heroes itself is a publication geared toward “true fans” – it is purchased by more die-hard fans, whereas many people that viewed the movies were more casual fans of the superhero. The publication and its description/analysis of Superman’s legacy are demonstrative of the origins of “fan culture”, where knowing everything about a character is seen as being of vital importance, and not knowing a certain fact makes one an inferior fan. The issue also features the “toughest” Superman quiz, another move meant to get readers more absorbed into Superman lore and more entrenched in the fan culture. Oftentimes, in addition to often being hostile and “know-it-all”-y, this pervasive culture can be less than welcoming to women; similarly, throughout the article, there are very few references to women involved in the Superman legacy, save for a few references to Lois Lane, his fictional love interest. By excluding women from both these pieces of media and the histories of them, the male-heavy “fanboy” trope becomes more and more closely associated with both Superman and, more broadly, comic books as a whole.</text>

<text>The Table of Contents offers a description of what can be found within this issue of Amazing Heroes, with the majority of the articles being about Superman. The page is headed by three separate phrases “No. 41”, “CONTENTS”, and “Feb. 15, 1984”. Below this, on the left-hand side, are three images atop one another. The first is a photograph of one of the many cinematic portrayals of Superman, pouring a glass of champagne. The next image is an illustration done by Wayne Boring, depicting the more aggressive side of Superman. Below this is an image of Superman walking past a burning building, donning a large furry hat. To the right of this is a column describing the contents of the issue, including “Editorial” by Dave Olbrich (page 6), “Star Wars”, an adventure comic, by Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson (page 7), “Newsflashes” by Steve Freitag, “An Interview with Wayne Boring” by Richard Pachter (page 26), “All Our Supermen” by Lynn Woolley (page 34), “Red Kryptonite” by Mark Waid (page 44), “Skyborne, Chapter V” by Dwight R. Decker (page 56), “Comics in Review” by R.A. Jones and Mark Waid (page 60), “Amazing Readers” by Mark Worden (page 63), and “The World’s Toughest Superman Quiz” by Mark Waid (page 66). Below this, it notes that the cover illustration was done by Wayne Boring, with colors and separations by Mr. Mace. The footer of the page has publication details and subscription information.

The issue focuses almost entirely on Superman, with the only non-column exceptions being a Star Wars comic and a new chapter of Skyborne. This is in honor of the newly-released Superman III, the fourth well-known Superman film. With half the articles being related to the Man of Steel, this issue is demonstrative of the cultural impact Superman had, even decades after he had first been introduced or before his first comic book sold for a million dollars. His enduring popularity has made him one of the most iconic pieces of American culture, and these movies were important precedents to the more recent slew of Marvel and D.C. comic book films. At the time of publication, many comic book creators were deviating from “traditional” comic book mainstays, like Superman, and shifting their focus to non-traditional characters with more grounded political stances and opinions, in part to offset situations like the Vietnam War. This Bronze Age fascination did affect Superman in part, but he was able to remain primarily the same due to his enduring characteristics and timelessness. Additionally, this time period showed an increasing number of adults turning to comic books, many of whom were wistful for this beloved childhood entity and the traits that he represented. To many American adults, he was the standard for what a good American should be. As a character who was able to connect to American culture time and time again, he served not only as a reminder of nostalgic days gone by, but also as a promise of the future: his selflessness and moral prosperity served as examples to those feeling downtrodden by the political happenings of the day. Having an entire issue dedicated to him demonstrated that his popularity was one that defied all odds, and proving him to be someone that Americans could understand and identify with.

<text>The vibrant-covered forty-first issue of Amazing Heroes was released in February, 1984. The cover features a black sky, with white dots here and there representing stars. In the background, there is a long white streak in the sky as well, behind a yellow, pock-marked planet. In the foreground of the image, penned by Wayne Boring in 1983, is a large beige-colored planet, taking up the bottom quarter of the page. Standing on top of this planet is Superman, in his traditional red-yellow-blue suit, boots, and cape combination, the red “S” prominent on his chest. He is planting an American flag in the ground, and rocks are coming up where he is pushing the flagpole through the ground. Above him, in a muted orange, is the title – Amazing Heroes – and above that in the same color is a single line that reads “No. 41”, followed by “Feb. 15” and “$1.95 ($2.50 in Canada)”. At the very top of the cover is a highlighter-yellow strip with the words “SPECIAL SUPERMAN ISSUE!” over top it in a black font. There is no other text or explanations of what can be found within this issue; Superman is clearly meant to be the star of the show.

Superman’s status is one of legendary proportions; he is arguably the most well-known superhero and comic book figure of all time. From a stronger-than-average alien to a larger-than-life American icon, Superman has endured the test of the time and become engrained in popular culture to epic proportions. This issue of Amazing Heroes was released in the beginning of 1984, towards the end of the Bronze Age of comics, when current events like the Vietnam War, the Berlin Wall, and the presidency of Ronald Reagan were interlaced intrinsically with popular culture. This time period, spanning from roughly 1970 to 1986, was marked with political and social upheaval, along with shifting technological standards and developments. As one of the most blatant examples of American popular culture, Superman’s place on the cover of Amazing Heroes – particularly his symbolic planting of an American flag in the ground of this planet – suggests that he is more than just a beloved character; he is the embodiment of many American ideologies and standards. His creation echoed as much; early editions of Superman comics pointed to him as a moral defender and upstanding citizen. Additionally, his status as a literal alien makes this move on the cover even more meaningful; anyone, immigrant or native, can promote American values and interests. In this time period, within the midst of comics full of anti-heroes, an anti-authoritarian worldview, and increasingly complex philosophies and moral codes, Superman was able to adapt and retain his position as America’s defender. While at this point, Superman’s status as a movie star was debatably more culturally significant than his comic book ties, this cover focuses on his roots: the traditional suit, the America-centrism, and the animation. Wayne Boring’s Amazing Heroes cover is a reminder of where comic culture originated from, and the way it has evolved over time.</text>

<text>Issue number 125 of Amazing Heroes fanzine, published on September 15th of 1987 features an interview with underground comix creator, Frank Cirocco, written by Kevin Dooley, beginning on page 40. The start of the article features a two page spread, the title proclaiming in thin, bold letters “The Return of Frank Cirocco.” To the left of the title, there is a large black and white drawing of an alien animal that appears as a large snake with insect-like pinschers around its mouth. The drawing is captioned “Frank’s last reincarnation- Alien Legion, which still bears his co-creator status.” On top of the title, standing on the second “c” of Cirocco, there is a smiling, hula-hooping cartoon boy.

The interview largely takes a question and answer format between the interviewer and Cirocco, touching on topics such as Cirocco’s past work and experiences in the comics world, his educational experience, his frequent disappearance and reappearances from comics, his work with Continuity Studios, his Suburban High Life comics, which were published through Slave Labor Graphics, and features black and white frames from the Suburban High Life comics In Miller’s comics career, he was a figure of underground comix, a counterculture comics movement that was most prevalent from the 1960s through the 1980s. This movement in comics was known for being far less censored than other comics of the era, as these comix were largely self-published and often not sold on newsstands. The movement is known for using themes of sexuality, and often sexism, as well as themes around drugs, anti-capitalism, and darker humor than appeared in Comics Code Authority approved works of the time, which strictly banned mentions of drugs or any work that went against traditional American values. This dark humor is certainly present in the Suburban High Life comics Cirocco mentions within the interview- the featured panels from this comic depict the life of a man who is turned into a hot dog, who then descends into depression and alcoholism and contemplates suicide.

In many ways, these comics seem to channel some of the darkness of this counterculture movement. However, within the interview Cirocco also mentions his work with independent contributors to the comic. He mentions have no strict regulations for who may or may not contribute, likely drawing influence again from the underground comix movement, as the movement heavily influenced the popularity of freelance artists in comics, rather than in-office artists. Frank Cirocco himself has no degree in art, despite attending college for two years and pursuing a degree, perhaps also influencing his decision against stringently checking the credentials of potential contributors. The comic had many science fiction influenced themes, such as mind control and “mutant gigolos from outer space,” perhaps influencing the science fiction art that Cirocco contributed to the cover of this issue of Amazing Heroes. Thus, though the underground comix movement had largely died down by the time Cirocco provided this interview in 1987, his influences can still be connected to the movement as a whole, particularly in his project Suburban High Life. </text>

<text>Issue number 125 of Amazing Heroes fanzine focuses on Frank Cirocco, a prominent figure in the underground comix movement, which had a considerable amount of influence on the comics industry between the 1960s and the 1980s. At the top left corner of the table of contents page, the issue number, 125, and the date of publication, Sept. 15, are listed below the heading. The table of contents features “Imposing Marshal Law” by Frank Plowright (page 23), “Sable Starks The Small Screen,” one of the articles featured on the cover of the fanzine, written by Brian Nelson (page 31), and “The Return of Frank Cirocco” by Kevin Dooley (page 40), another one of the articles highlighted on the fanzine’s cover. Below, under the title “Departments,” the fanzine lists “Editorial” (page 4).. “Newsline” (page 5), “Coming Distractions” (page 11), “Video View” (page 37), “Doc’s Bookshelf” (page 55), “Comics in Review” (page 65), “Amazing Readers” (page 72), “Everett True” (page 78), and “Don Rosa’s Information Center” (page 81).

Separating the two headings is a black and white drawing of a superhero, drawn slightly over the edges of the panel, hovering in the sky while facing down a distant aircraft. Underground comix, featured heavily in this issue, were a counterculture movement that strongly influenced the world of comics in the 1960s through the 1980s, though they have historically not received much attention in academic fields. Counterculture itself can be viewed as an attempt to build alternative cultural movements to counter more mainstream movements. However, underground comix are sometimes described as epitomizing the 1960s, which is when the term “comix” was first applied to these publications. These publications were often less monitored and censored, as they were largely self-published and not on newsstands, and thus contained and had roots to more sexual content. In these comix, sex was implied to occur off the panel, and some feminist and pro-LGBTQ materials began to be published as the movement came to a stop. However, the underground comix movement, with a few exceptions, was largely known to be misogynistic, particularly in its portrayal of violence against women. Overall, the underground, less corporate nature of the comix were not necessarily subject to the Comics Code Authority, and thus experienced more freedom in exploring topics not only involving sexuality but including drugs and anti-capitalist sentiments. Many of these influences came not from the typical locations, but came largely from the San Francisco Bay area of California, along with the East Village of Manhattan and Austin, Texas. Additionally, some consider underground comix to have been inspired by MAD magazine and college satire magazines in the way that the counterculture magazines made heavy critiques of American culture. The nature of the comix’s distribution also encouraged freelance art, and as a result, the underground comix movement allowed freelance artists to become more common in the industry as a whole, though many freelance artists struggled to find well-paying work during the time. Frank Cirocco was highly prominent in the field of underground comix, and after his work with Continuity Studios and Zero Horizon Graphics, he went on to work with Marvel. While underground comix are cited have met an untimely end through literary suppression of the content, the movement still has prominent figures and continues on to influence the comic book and graphic novel industry, including Marvel Graphic novels, which contain original stories, not simple compilations of stories that were already in print, such as Frank Cirocco.</text>

<text>Amazing Heroes issue number 125 was published on September 15th of 1987. The red cover is capped on the right and left side by two lavender-gray colored blocks and has an image framed in white in the middle of the cover. The image, a piece created by Frank Cirocco, a figure in the underground comix movement, features two main figures, a golden robot with red eyes and a black and gold vest and wrist cuffs and a rounded boulder underneath his arm and a woman with short blonde hair, dressed in a red dress and light brown belt, standing against a cloudy, green background. On the same ship as these two figures, a man in a green cap is peering into the distance through binoculars. In the background, small rocks are broken off of a larger boulder and float through the sky. Additionally, two more individuals stand on a small space ship in the distance. Below this image in white text, the issue proclaims “The Return of Frank Cirocco,” indicating the interview with Frank Cirocco that is contained within the issue. Below this caption, white lettering reads “Jon Sable T.V. Preview.”

Occurring largely in the 1960s through the 1980s, underground comix, discussed in this issue through the presence of Frank Cirocco, was notorious for both sexism and feminism in comics culture. The movement was largely centered in the San Francisco Bay area of California and saw far less censorship than typical comics of the era, though some notable but relatively mild censorship still occurred, such as the case of the Tijuana Bibles comics that were largely sold under the counter. Thus, these comix were notorious for sexual content and leading with the concept that sex sells. Sexism was heavily presented in these comix, as violence against women was regularly portrayed and treated as humorous. However, through feminist titles such as It Ain’t Me, Babe, Pudge, Wimmen’s Comix, Tits and Clits, and Dynamite Damsels, feminist content was represented and forefronted women’s pleasure, experiences, and gender inequalities, though many feminists of the era still rejected the highly sexual content. Despite this, many of these comix still referenced and discussed prominent feminist works of the period. However, these comix’s focus on the relationship between liberation and taboo subjects were largely meant to push against purity narratives that implied women were asexual, and any sexual desire implied either their “otherness” or their broken nature. The comix referenced not only gender inequalities, but the struggles and often discouraging nature behind remaining in an activist role in the era, particularly in the character Freida in Dynamite Damsels, who experiences burnout and contradictory feelings regarding her feminist position, though humor in these comix was also used largely to release the tensions felt by feminists of the period. Thus, while sexism was common in these underground comix, there were clear feminist movements and creators within the movement as a whole. These comix also largely explored lesbian identities, especially Pudge and Dynamite Damsels, though many comix discussed both lesbian women and the presence of non-white women within the feminist movement, thus working to acknowledge these intersections within the movement. While these feminist comix still depicted sexuality, they worked to reframe sexuality to prioritize women and women’s experiences.</text>

<text>Issue number 187 of the Amazing Heroes fanzine was published in January of 1991. This issue contains an interview with Stan Sakai written by Gil Jordan, creator of the Usagi comics, from pages 26 to 35, titled “Stan Sakai Interviewed.” The pages include black and white drawings from Stan Sakai, both of his characters from the Usagi Yojimbo comics and other works, background on the creator, the evolution of Usagi as both a character and the comic as a whole, and his personal thoughts, plans, and details on his creative processes. The interview is transcribed, representing questions and answers between Gil Jordan, the interviewer, and Stan Sakai. The title page of the interview contains the black, boldface title, “Stan Sakai Interviewed,” a drawing of Usagi in heavy armor and sandals with his sword drawn and leaves creating a waving line in the air behind him. There is a text-based description containing a brief description of the history of Usagi Yojimbo comics. In this interview, Sakai largely describes his personal history in and out of the comic book industry.

Stan Sakai was born Kyoto, Japan in 1953. As a young child, Sakai’s family moved to Hawaii. Sakai describes that he grew up with comic books, and comic books fostered his love of reading and art. His enthusiasm drove his work and connections within the industry, even long after he was new to the industry. Usagi Yojimbo, the comic Sakai is featured for in this issue, was first published as an independent comic in 1985. The popularity of Usagi Yojimbo largely rode a wave of immense Japanese and manga influence in comics culture in the 1980s, which was preceded by a wave of influence in the 1960s. Each of these influential waves affected American comics culture in many distinct ways, from content to serialization. Many such Japanese popular culture inspired comics were published in this era, including Lone Wolf and Cub and Mai the Psychic Girl. This broad appreciation for Japanese animation pushed Usagi’s success throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Usagi is heralded by the interview as “the second most unlikely success of the late eighties,” only behind the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Usagi and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, sharing the common theme of anthropomorphic fighters, even shared licensing for a time as Usagi appeared on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles television show. Before even working on Usagi, Sakai created freelance art for advertising, book illustrations, and record covers. Additionally, Sakai taught calligraphy, leading him to letter the comic Groo the Wanderer. Previous to Usagi’s premiere as an independent comic, Sakai first presented the samurai rabbit as an eight-page story in another comic. Though Usagi is commonly classified as a manga or a funny animal comic, Sakai does not necessarily label it as such, and cites a heavier influence from Japanese ninja and samurai-inspired movies. Yet, Sakai does say that the rabbit, or Usagi in Japanese, is an important figure, usually showing cleverness and bravery, in Japanese myths and legends. The comic started as a historical book featuring real historical figures, and Usagi himself was based on a 17th-century samurai named Miyamoto Musashi. Aside from Usagi, Sakai has also lettered for The Amazing Spiderman and worked on the Strange Tales comics with Marvel, among other works.

<text>This black-and-white page and subsequent article was the inspiration behind the cover, which features Moon Knight. At the top of the page, centered and occupying about a quarter of the page’s space, is the title: “A New Phase for Moon Knight”. The only portion of the text that is bolded is the character’s name, Moon Knight. Below this, on a single line, reads “By Michael Catron”, a well-known contributor to Amazing Heroes. Underneath this, on the left side of the page, are four penciled images, all done by Bill Sienkiewicz for the eighteenth issue of Moon Knight. The first image is the largest, with a man yelling “No”, his head and chest thrust back in a scream, facing a sign that reads “COME TO THE CITADEL AT MIDNITE”. To the right of this are three images; the top is an image of the same man reaching forward, the center is the hand touching the letters, and the bottom image is the man putting his fingers to his mouth, tasting the substance used to write the message. To the right of these four hand-drawn images is five paragraphs, just a handful of the sections that make up the article. These five paragraphs introduce and contextualize the character and its changing style, along with featuring quotes from the penciler, Bill Sienkiewicz.

The character of Moon Knight is not, in fact, a traditional hero; he has three secret identities, and he was, in fact, originally intended to be both a villain and a “psycho” – in other words, an anti-hero. While it came off as a little too self-indulgent and heavy and was subsequently made to be more adventure-based, it still retained the idea that, as series scripter and creator Doug Moench explained, anyone who chooses to become a superhero must be a little “nuts”. He is joined by other famous comic book anti-heroes, like the X-Men’s Wolverine, the Watchmen’s Rorshach, Ghost Rider, Judge Dredd, and Deadpool, many of which were popularized during the Bronze Age of comics (about 1970-1985). Many of these anti-heroes displayed the three traits found in the ”Dark Triad of personality” – narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism. These traits are not necessarily used to vilify anti-heroes; instead, they provide insight into why people often utilize these traits for survival, and how art imitates life – or, in this case, how the nuance behind one’s actions can strongly affect others’ perceptions of their behavior. This turning of the tides toward more realistic portrayals of superheroes was informed in part by political events and social issues of the 1970s and 1980s, like racism, women’s rights, and the presidency of Ronald Reagan. In particular, the rise of the comic book anti-hero can be attributed to the United States’s involvement in Vietnam in the late 1960s/early 1970s. The war was highly contested from its conception, and many of the crimes committed during it led to disdain for soldiers and veterans. As a result, the American public shied away from these traditional heroes, instead prioritizing flawed, complex characters with unique backgrounds – anti-heroes. This desire for flawed heroes perfectly paved the way for less traditional heroes, often tormented or suffering mental health issues, like Moon Knight.</text>

There are considered to be two waves of broad Japanese cultural influence, the first wave taking place in the 1960s and the second in the 1980s, considered to have had an impact on the United States. This particular issue of Amazing Heroes was published in 1991 and the manga-inspired theme of this issue can be contributed to the wave of manga-enthusiasm that continued in through the late eighties to the early nineties. Usagi Yojimbo, featured along with his creator, Stan Sakai, was borne of this second wave of Japanese cultural influence. The global influence of Japanese mangas was largely pushed by the population’s interest in Japanese animation, sometimes called Japanimation, and American comic book publishers saw and grasped the opportunity to further this trend. Thus, the 1980s saw many manga-inspired comics, such as Ronan and Zot!, as well as many translated editions of original mangas, such as Lone Wolf and Cub and Mai the Psychic Girl. This wave of popularity leaked into the early 1990s as well, when this particular issue of Amazing Heroes was published, but this era of influence can also be seen through translations of the popular Akira comics.

First published in Japan in 1982, Akira was translated for English speaking audiences later in the 1980s. While this publication could not quite break manga into the popular consciousness of American literature, its translation certainly had a massive effect on American comic book culture, and largely contributed to manga’s spike in popularity during the 1980s. The success of these mangas and manga-inspired comics can help the decision to feature Stan Sakai and Usagi in this issue of Amazing Heroes. Initially, manga and anime were viewed as a juvenile form of entertainment, much like American comic books, but as their popularity rose, the existing genres of manga expanded as sales increased. The reasons for manga’s popularity is complex and varied, but as the 1980s progressed, manga was seen as not only popular and fashionable, but as a serious topic for academic essays and studies. Thus, Usagi Yojimbo and his creator, Stan Sakai, are firmly situated within the second large wave of Japanese cultural influence in the eighties, along with many other mangas and manga-inspired comics.</text>

<text>The sixth issue of Amazing Heroes has a black-and-white Table of Contents, one whose header features the title, Amazing Heroes, on the left side, and the words “No. 6” and “November 1981” on the right. After this, it lists the more notable aspects of the issue. Such aspects include the cover illustration, “Moon Knight and Marlene – a Family Portrait” by Bill Sienkiewicz, “Amazing Readers” which features letters from fans, “Star Wars”, an adventure story written by Archie Goodwin and Al Williamson, “Comics Report”, a news compilation by Michael Catron, “Coming Distractions”, a checklist of new comics, “A New Phase for Moon Knight” by Michael Catron, “The Life and Death of the Doom Patrol”, an article chronicling the history of the Doom Patrol by George Guay, “Doom Patrol Index” by George Guay, a “Star Hawks” adventure by Archie Goodwin and Gil Kane, and an illustration of Dr. Fate by Mark Lamport. To the right of this list, there are several illustrations of characters mentioned throughout the issue, including animations of Darth Vader and Moon Knight. Below the list, on the left-hand side, there is a list of staff members. To the right of this, publication/copyright information and ad rates are offered. Next to this, there is a list of advertisers and what page they are advertising on. Finally, the lower right-hand side is marked with a “5” for the page number.

The Table of Contents features three main popular culture references: Star Wars, Moon Knight, and Doom Patrol. All three of these popular entities – one originating as a movie that spun off into comics, with the other two’s origins in comic books – feature non-traditional heroes throughout their series. In the Star Wars films, the character of Han Solo is a great example of an anti-hero; he is snarky and rude, but begrudgingly saves the day. Doom Patrol features a group of misfits with superheroes, lovingly referred to as the “world’s strangest heroes”. Lastly, Moon Knight features an anti-hero with three secret identities, who also displays the “Dark Triad of personality”. These three series, while very different, offer unique perspectives on the identities of heroes, and what it means to be one. By featuring three sets of abnormal, go-against-the-grain heroes within its pages, Amazing Heroes is demonstrating to its readers that there is a completely alternative way of being a hero, one that goes against the prior understanding of what it means to really be a hero. For example, in the case of Han Solo (in Episode IV: A New Hope), he is not driven by a desire to save others – in fact, he is reluctant to do so, both when rescuing Princess Leia and when the Rebels attack the Death Star. However, his desire for riches is what led him there, and is his initial motivation; it is not until later in the movie that he decides to do the “right thing” for the sake of doing it. Essentially, Han Solo is not a hero because he wants to be; he is a hero as a result of his reluctance. In featuring such eccentric, and sometimes morally questionable, characters and positioning them as heroes, Amazing Heroes takes the stance that there is a lot more to being a hero than donning a cape and flying around major cities.
