<text>The title “Amazing Heroes” is printed in black outline on the top left of the page. Eleven items are on the list of contents and these include long-form articles, short news blurbs, price, and release date information about past and future comics, comic strips, and colored visual art pieces. This issue places a spotlight on the Teen Titans and there are three items on the list related to the group. These three items are the cover depicting the Teen Titans drawn by George Perez, a “hero history” of the Teen Titans by Tom Burkert, and an index of the Teen Titans comics which has a drawing of four members of the Titans next to it. The other items on the list are an editorial by the executive editor Michael Catron, a Star Wars comic strip, “Comics Report”, “Coming Distractions”, a short humor comic called “The Collectors”, a story about a convention in New York, a space-themed comic strip titled “Star Hawks”, and a painting of Superman by Paul McCall. In the bottom left corner, there is a list of this issue’s staff. Next to that is various copyright, publication, and distribution information. In the bottom right corner, there is a list of advertisers in the issue along with where the advertisements are.

The entries on the table of contents show the many goals of this publication. The drawing by George Perez helps to show the legitimacy the publication by bringing a real name in the industry. Along with that, it brings a name tied to this new Teen Titans series. The inclusion of a hero history and index would have been desired by fans as they may want to revisit these older Teen Titans comics before diving into the new series as many new characters were already being added to the Teen Titans world. Though each issue may have a different focus and long-form articles about a variety of comic topics, there are some items on the list that provide information that readers want each issue. These items are the “Comics Report” section, which provided comic-related news stories of the month, and the “Coming Distractions” section, which provided a list of upcoming comic titles. As this publication was in its infancy, these sections would be replaced by others containing similar information in later issues. This information would have been desirable to a comic-reading audience. With the rise of the direct market, readers wanted to know what was going on in the industry, the titles that would be coming out soon, and when to get them from their local comic shops. The inclusion of two space-themed comic strips speaks to a common audience between science fiction and comics, the inclusion of a Star Wars comic specifically speaks to an attempt to capitalize off the success of the two films that had been released by the time of this issue’s publication. Marvel had already had success with a Star Wars comic adaptation which laid the groundwork for other comic creators to follow. The convention article signifies the increased interaction between comic readers and comic creators during this period.</text>

<text>This is the cover of second issue of the periodical <em>Amazing Heroes.</em> It was released in July of 1981 and sold for $1.50. The title “Amazing Heroes” is in red and centered at the top of the page. The titles “Star Wars!” and “Star Hawks!” to the left of the main title are teasing comic strips that are inside the publication. The blurb to the right of the main title is teasing a news story that is inside the publication specifically naming artists Jack Kirby and Mike Grell. Near the bottom-right corner is a yellow circle outlined in white which reads: “Inside: The Teen Titans Hero History &amp; Index”. Nine of the eleven characters on the cover are members of the Teen Titans. The five members in the background (going counterclockwise from under “July 1981”) are: Speedy, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Wonder Girl, and Robin. The four members in the foreground (going left to right) are: Beast Boy, Cyborg, Raven, and Starfire. Beast Boy is crouched next to a stack of comics and holding a comic that is partially in a bag. Raven is holding a comic book open and reading. The signature of comic artist George Perez is in the bottom-right corner indicating that he illustrated the cover.<br /><br />The five superheroes in the background of the drawing were all part of the original run and the original revival of the Teen Titans. The first team-up was <em>The Brave and the Bold</em> #54 and consisted of Robin, Kid Flash, and Aqualad, but the “Teen Titans” moniker was not used to denote the group until <em>The Brave and the Bold </em>#60 where the trio was joined by Wonder Girl. Speedy officially joined the team in <em>Teen Titans </em>#19, but he had made guest appearances before then. This original run of <em>Teen Titans</em> was canceled in 1973 after the release of issue #43. <em>Teen Titans</em> was revived in November 1976 with issue #44, but it was canceled again in February 1978 following the release of issue #53. The group was rebooted in November 1980 with the release of <em>The New Teen Titans</em> #1 which was written by Marv Wolfman and drawn by George Perez who also illustrated this cover. This series brought back Beast Boy, who had been rejected from the Teen Titans in the original run, and introduced Cyborg, Raven, and Starfire. Raven reformed the group in order to fight her demon father Trigon. The 1978 cancellation of the original series was due to DC believing that their audience had outgrown the teen heroes. The powers that were at DC changed their tune after seeing the success of Marvel’s X-Men comics. In keeping with this inspiration, the new titans were more diverse in terms of race and gender. This new group proved to be at the center of one of DC’s best-selling comic book series of the decade. The popularity of this new series was such that this issue of <em>Amazing Heroes</em> was sold out in back issues by the release of <em>Amazing Heroes</em> #27.</text>

<text>This depicts the beginning of the article “Bob Kane: The Man Whose Name Means Batman”. The title is written in large print, taking up almost half of the page. Next to the title is the shadow of Robin, with Robin right underneath the shadow. Robin is in costume and standing with his hands on his hips as he stares off into space. His costume consists of a dramatic cape, a leotard, gloves, and shoes. It is also important to note the lack of pants. On his face is a half mask obscuring his eyes. His expression can only be described as being valiant. Another thing to note is the youth that exudes from Robin. Robin is clearly a younger man, maybe even in his early 20s or younger. Below, towards the left side of the page, it states “Interview by Shel Dorf”. It then goes on to state that Bob Kane was not available for a new interview, so an old interview with Shel Dorf, a cartoonist, is reprinted here. The introduction states that even though this is an old interview from the 70s, it still holds true since the interview itself focuses on the creation of Batman in the 30s. Batman is an important figure in comics in that he shows the enduring impact superheroes can have on society.

Batman has served the test of time mainly in the fact that he has an ever-changing role. Understanding this is important in contextualizing the cultural narrative surrounding comics in that Batman became a part of culture due to his roles. Batman has probably served more roles than any other character, and he has also adapted with the times to stay relevant. For instance, in the 70s, when space exploration was taking off, Batman and Robin time traveled, become mutated, etc. Also, with the emergence of the practice of going to the movies, Batman would become one of the first superhero characters to get his own movie. This reflected the increasing idea of pop culture and media as technology now allowed for figures to become icons. Batman is also an interesting reflection on the idea of the ‘impressionable youth’. In Batman’s beginning, he was quite violent and was often depicted with weapons. Towards the 40s though, more and more people became concerned that Batman’s violent actions would infect the youths. Shortly after, Batman comics became squeaky clean; he no longer killed; he no longer was portrayed with guns. Batman was also softened with the introduction of the character Robin, who served the role of innocent apprentice/sidekick. This ‘cleansing’ of Batman comics has to do with the larger cultural narrative at the time, as many people were fearful that the rapid urbanization of the cities was stripping humanity of its moral compass. By the 80s though, mass media was no longer so innocent and the Batman character was used as a way to contextualize with the ever-changing world around them. With the Cold War, race riots, problems in the middle east, etc. people struggled to make sense of the world, and characters with deep psychological psychoses were used to do this.

<text>The table of contents for Amazing Heroes issue #167 can be found on page 4 and 5 in the periodical. It is split amongst two pages. The left page is dedicated to the main 3 articles. The left side of the left page simply says ‘contents’ vertically downward. Next to that are the three main articles. The first title is ‘The Man Whose Name Means Batman’ with an image of Batman and Robin next to it. Underneath the title is the description. Underneath this is the second other major article titled ‘Ace of Cartoons’ with a picture of the Joker right next to it. Underneath the title is the description of this article. Underneath this article is the last major article ‘The Real Dynamic Duo’ with the description of the article underneath. Next to that is a picture of Batman and Robin exploring the sea. This is all that is on the left page. The right page has all the minor articles with short descriptions under some of them. Some of the minor articles listed also have pictures depicted next to them. The section articles are as followed, ‘Perspective’, ‘Newsline’, ‘Coming Distractions’, ‘Backstage’, ‘Doc’s Bookshelf’, ‘Info Center’, ‘Small Talk’, ‘Comics in Review’, ‘Amazing Readers’, ‘The Cartoonist’, ‘Batman Pinup’, and ‘Storm’s Index’. On the right side of the page are the staff section with the editorial team, contributor’s info, index to advertisers, ad rates, and distributors. This table of contents is a good reflection on the history of Batman, as it is almost solely dedicated to him.

One theme that is prevalent in this table of contents is the interest in the origins of Batman. Batman started up in 1939 in DC Comics as a result of the success of Superman. Companies were seeing that the character Superman was taking off, and bringing a lot of money to the corporation as a result. DC Comics responded to this with the introduction of Batman, who was a vigilante out to stop corruption in the cities. This is a result of the fear many Americans were feeling at the time over the urbanization. Before the 40s, many people lived in rural areas, but with the industrial boom and immigration boom, more and more people migrated to the cities. With this rapid growth of the cities though, many became fearful that America’s morality would suffer and that crime would be on the rise. This led to the increase of the ‘detective story’. These detective’s jobs were to eradicate violence and crime in the city. Batman pays homage to this type of story in that he mirrored these detective characters in almost all ways, except that he dressed in a bat suit and fought crime in secret. Batman was also interesting in that his origin story revolved around trauma. This was a way of exploring ‘what could have been’. The 40s was a bleak time for many; immigrants came to America hoping for a good life but ended up working in bad conditions, people lived in the city with no roaming area, etc. Trauma was everywhere, and Batman was used to showing that even despite the trauma, you could thrive and be a force for good. Batman was a way of exploring the times and was used to mitigate become the bleak circumstances many people found themselves in the city.

<text>The page that is most representative of Amazing Heroes Issue 141 is page 21. On this page, and in the article as a whole, Heidi MacDonald’s article “House of Semi-Raging Women” is featured. This article is written in a three-column format and has a comic with two panes in the top left corner of the page. This comic features a conversation between a man and a woman. The first panel shows the man speaking to the woman as she’s lying on a couch. The man is telling her: “I guess I don’t have to be tall and handsome to get a beautiful lady like you, Rea! Money has a great deal of fascination to pretty girls, doesn’t it?” The woman, now identified as Rea, responds: “Oh, you’re very fascinating, Mr. Lahr.” But, the mood shifts in the second panel as Rea continues: “You’re so rich and powerful I hardly notice what a worm you are!” Mr. Lahr responds to this off-panel by exclaiming “What?” This interaction suggests that Mr. Lahr believes “pretty girls”, in this case Rea, are shallow enough to lust after a man just because he has money. Rea plays along at first, but then shuts this interaction down as she exposes Mr. Lahr as a worm for holding this view.

This article zeroes in on the issue of misrepresentation and sexualization of women in comics. In this article, Heidi MacDonald touches on the fact that women aren’t being given roles that are equivalent to the roles that men are being given in the 1980s. While women did hold executive positions in the comic book industry, they were not given the opportunity to work as artists are creative writers, which greatly influences how women are portrayed in the comic book articles that are ultimately produced. In these articles, women are sexualized due to stereotypes and comically-disproportioned bodies. This misrepresentation causes women to become eroticized comic book characters rather than characters with a meaningful storyline. Oftentimes, the woman is only written into the storyline in the first place because the hero of the story, a man, needs somebody he can save in order to promote his masculinity. This feeds into the problem of male comic book readers seeing women as little more than an attractive object to be saved, instead of as a real person. In addition to being sexualized, women in comics are heavily idealized. Most women are drawn in ways that are anatomically incorrect, thus representing a type of standard that female comic book readers can never achieve. Heidi MacDonald is able to take a critical look at these prevalent issues in the comic book industry and demand that things should be changed. Instead of these women having superficial storylines where their only purpose is to be a piece of meat waiting to be rescued, MacDonald stresses that female comic book characters must be given a meaningful storyline in order to promote equality. This, as is the theme of “House of Semi-Raging Women” all begins with the writers. If they’re not women, things may never change, so it’s important to not discriminate when it comes to making important hiring decisions.</text>

Fantagraphics Books, publisher of this issue of the Amazing Heroes comic series, came together in 1976 after publishing a magazine called The Comics Journal, a magazine that spoke out against and harshly criticized the comic book industry for producing content that was at most mediocre. Because they were tired of this continuing lack of quality production, in 1982, the creators of this magazine decided to start their own production company, thus creating Fantagraphics Books. Their first published piece was titled “Love and Rockets” by Gilbert and Jaime Hernandez, and they have continued to publish well-known works ever since. This company has attained international renown and has received positive comments from The New York Times, TIME, Publishers Weekly, Wired, and several other companies. By taking the leap and cementing itself into the comic book industry, Fantagraphics Books has established itself as a highly-prestigious publishing firm. Editor Kevin Dooley heads the editorial staff for Issue 141 of the Amazing Heroes collection. He has been involved in the creation of Aquaman, and in creating this character, was determined to do everything he could to bring the fans’ visions of this character to life. He gives a lot of credit to the artists, colorists, and letterers, who he believed all used their own experiences and styles to the table and played a major role in Aquaman’s final creation. Because of his expertise and editing experience at DC, Dooley was hired to become an editor of the Amazing Heroes comic series. He and Stan Lee exchanged letters to each other, which demonstrated their strong bond with each other. Thus, Dooley has proven that he has the expertise and sensitivity to serve as the editor of a comic book issue focused on the importance of women in comics. After all, the representation of the created female comic book characters begins with the staff who creates them.</text>

<text>The 141st issue of the Amazing Heroes comic series focuses on the role of women in comics. The cover page features a picture of a woman in distress as she stops to think about what her role is in the comic book world. She is shown thinking to herself: “B – but will I always be thought of as a woman cartoonist? When do I get to join the big boys’ club?” There is also a picture of a man pointing to three different doors, two of which are labeled ‘Penciller’ and ‘Writer’. This man is saying: “Your future awaits! Adventure! Excitement! Pick a door – Any door!” While the man is smiling as he invites the woman to choose the door that will lead to her career path, the woman displays a look of hopelessness and despair, as she wonders whether she will be thought of as a woman writer, or a woman penciller, rather than simply a writer or penciller. While the man’s dialogue is spoken out loud, the woman keeps her thoughts to herself, suggesting that she knows she would face a backlash if she were to express these thoughts out loud.

The woman in this cover photo has a legitimate reason to feel worried about how comic book readers will perceive her. In the 1980s, women faced a lot of backlash in the comic book industry, both in real life and in the comic books themselves. In the real world, women were not offered jobs such as illustrators or writers, as it was believed that women weren’t talented enough to take on such a major role. In addition, the comic book industry was becoming increasingly appealing to young boys, so nobody thought women would be appropriate to hire as writers for a male-centered industry. Thus, when women did start getting roles in these positions, they were, as the woman in the cover photo worried about, seen as “woman cartoonists” and “woman writers”, rather than just “cartoonists” and “writers”. In addition, this woman’s worries about her role in the comic book industry carry over to the comic books themselves. Traditionally, female characters are seen as weak, helpless, passive, and overly feminine. Their only role is to be swept up and rescued by some hypermasculine superhero in order for the day to be saved. Thus, when female comic book characters are drawn to be more muscular or written to be more independent, they are seen simply as a threatening character, again negating the rest of their personalities and identities. This idea that a female character must have some sort of label or adjective attached to her has been a trend for decades, justifying the beliefs of this woman on the cover page. This issue as a whole addresses these concerns and, as seen later on in Heidi MacDonald’s article “House of Semi-Raging Women”, this issue stems from women having little control or say in how female characters are to be represented in comic books and in the general media in the first place. </text>

<text>This is one half of a 2-page article spread. The title is cut off, but what is visible reads ‘Sci-Fan, Sci-f’ and ‘Paul Gulacy: A’. This title is set against a black background, the letters being white. On the left side of the page is a thin column of the background for the article. It goes into depth on Paul Gulacy’s career. It describes his work on “Masters of Kung Fu”, which was his first major work. He also worked on Daredevil, worked for Marvel, even did a Batman comic. It mentions themes of the direct market and technology as well. To the right of this description is a part of a comic panel which contains Coldlood-7, aka Eric Savin, who Gulacy created. Coldblood-7 is in full futuristic armor, with a utility belt and even a half metal mask covering the right side of his face. He appears to be falling sideways as he shoots something out of his right arm towards something or someone who is out of frame. The words “CHUN CHUN” are seen in the blast coming out of the weapon he is presumably holding in his right hand. The edge of a metal-like, robotic-looking hand peeks out from the top right corner. We can assume that this is the ‘thing’ Coldblood-7 is shooting. Below Coldblood-7 there is a person in full on stormtrooper looking gear who appears to be falling backward. There is a Batman symbol on his helmet. This page serves as a good representation in that it discusses many themes prevalent in the 80s. One that they bring up is the direct market. In the description of Gulacy’s past work, it mentions that one comic he worked on is believed to be the beginning of the direct market revolution. This occurred in the 80s, as a result, to decrease in distribution.

When vendors were given the option of either selling more expensive magazines or cheap comics, they option opted for the option that they profited the most from, which was magazines. This meant that a lot of what comic companies were creating were not even making it to the shelves due to the fact that distributors would only buy the big name, big selling comics. Strangely though, the comic reading base was still strong—there was still a demand for comics. This led to the creation of the direct market, which was the sale of comics directly to distributors that more and more commonly sold only exclusively comics. Now space existed for comics to thrive and for comic book readers to shop for a wider variety of comics. Another theme explored in this image is technology. The 70s and 80s saw a drastic change in technology, be it weapons, NASA, and just everyday home appliances. Literature came to reflect this new interest in using technology to make us not entirely better, but maybe simply different. In years past, technology was looked at as something to be skeptical of or something to be overcome. As the world grew to see how the world could use technology, it became more and more ingrained into who we are. This becomes quite metaphorical if we consider the fact that for Coldblood-7, technology literally becomes ingrained in who he is.

<text>This article from Issue 116 of the Amazing Heroes comic book series is found on page 67 of the book. It is featured in the “Doc’s Bookshelf” department that was mentioned in the table of contents. The title of this article is “The Acronymic Funnybook Affair” and is written by Dwight R. Decker. The article is displayed in a three-column format and has a large chunk of the bottom right corner taken up by the image of a man standing next to a globe with circular rays emitting from it. There are no facial features visible on the man, as he is standing too far back from the front of the frame to be able to tell what he looks like. This makes him seem more mysterious, which plays into the fact that he’s a James-Bond-esque spy. Around this picture is the phrase “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.”, which suggest that the man presented in this drawing is “the man from U.N.C.L.E.” In the article, the meaning of this acronym is explained; it stands for “the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement”. The following two pages of this article are designed in a similar format: both are written with three columns and contain a large comic panel somewhere on the page.

The creation of the character James Bond had a profound impact on American culture in the 1960s. When his escapades and gadgets came to life on screen, a craze for the spy genre began to form. As the James Bond series and spy genre, in general, were becoming popular, television producer Norman Felton decided to enlist help from Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond, to help him come up with a concept for a TV show. They came up with James-Bond-esque characteristics that could be applied to this new character in the show, who would be named Napoleon Solo. As there were too many similarities to the James Bond franchise, Fleming had to remove himself from the project and get rid of the ideas; so, Felton hired Sam Rolfe, a man with a variety of experience in the television field. Together, they created additional characters for the show and brought the story to life. The Man from Uncle finally aired on NBC with the pilot episode “The Vulcan Affair”. A few years later, in 1966, a spinoff show titled The Girl from U.N.C.L.E. was aired, featuring April Dancer, which was one of the names that Ian Fleming had come up with while he was still involved in the original show. There have been several shows and comic books that have referenced The Man from U.N.C.L.E. in their own storylines. This show kickstarted the television spy genre in the United States. The new genre helped Americans find a means of escape from the political problems present in the United States at the time. Many shows that were being aired around the same time looked to promote some sort of political message in order to keep up with the political culture, so The Man from U.N.C.L.E. was a breath of fresh air for Americans looking to finally get away from all of the politics.</text>

<text>The table of contents for Issue 116 of the Amazing Heroes comic book series consists of featured articles, different departments, and the staff list on the adjacent page. The staff includes Editor Kim Thompson, Art Directors Dale Crain and Doug Erb (with some help from Michael Adams), News Correspondent J. Collier, Production Assistant Teresa Moore, Typesetting by L. M. Gorell and Ariene Easter, and Circulation by Rachel Enger. This issue was published by Fantagraphics Books, Inc. and was printed at Port Publications, WI. The featured articles are as follows: “Colon Goes for the Championship” by Ernie Colon, “Out of America” by Andy Mangels, and “Ten of a Kind” by Patrick Daniel O'Neill. There are also a large number of departments that are listed: Editorial, Perspective, Newsline, Coming Distractions, Firstlook, Doc’s Bookshelf, Comics in Review, Amazing Readers, and Don Rosa’s Information Center. In the bottom right corner of the page is a comic of the Samurai featured in the table of contents exclaiming, “I want you! – Matt Champion”. A weak old man is pictured next to this Samurai saying, “Hey! You can’t just come into this ring with them swor-” and is cut off due to the nunchucks being wrapped around his neck.

Ernie Colon was born in Puerto Rico in 1931, but was ultimately raised in the United States. In 1960, he began his career, first working for 20 years at publishing house Harvey, first as a letterer, and then as an artist for series such as Casper the Friendly Ghost, Monster in my Pocket, and Richie Rich. After Harvey went out of business, he began work as a freelancer for other comic book companies; some of these companies include DC Comics, Eclipse Comics, Valiant Comics, and Marvel Comics. He has written several graphic novels, comics, and biographies of his own, including two books on the 9/11 terrorist attacks and an Anne Frank bibliography. Besides his work on these projects, Colon was involved in drawing the cover for the Matt Champion series; only one issue actually ended up being published, though it is unclear why this was the case. Colon also did an interview discussing his project Underworld. He talks about how this project was unique because it gave DC the chance to write about something other than superheroes, and because it has a cops-and-robbers vibe to it. At DC Comics, Colon also was involved in the production of Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Blackhawks, and the Flash. At Marvel, Ernie Colon was part of the team that produced Spiderman. The editor of this issue of the Amazing Heroes series is Kim Thompson, who became editor of the comics after Michael Catron left the company to pursue other works. The comic panel depicted on this table of contents page is actually the cover page for the third Matt Champion comic issue, which ultimately went unpublished. So, even though this series only had one issue that was ultimately published, referencing this cover page was a way to tie in information about Ernie Colon that would appear later in this Amazing Heroes issue.
