<text>The 117th issue of Amazing Heroes was released on May 15th, 1987 for $2.50 in the United States and $3.75 in Canada. The cover has a purple background and contains an image of Michael Jackson. Jackson’s outfit is from the movie Captain EO which was released in 1986. This American 3D science fiction film was shown at Disney theme parks from 1986 through 1996. The attraction also returned to Disney Parks after Michael Jackson’s death as a tribute and continued to play at Epcot until December 2015. George Lucas produced this seventeen-minute space opera. The plot is as follows: Captain EO (Michael Jackson) and his space crew are on a mission to deliver a gift to their supreme leader. As they arrive, the crew is captured by the henchmen of the Supreme Leader and sentences the crew to be turned into trash cans and Captain EO must be tortured in the deepest dungeon for 100 years. The crew then begins to fight against the Supreme Leader and her henchmen as they sing various Michael Jackson hits. The spacesuit he wears on the cover of the 117th issue of Amazing Heroes demonstrates Michael Jackson’s style and the fact that the movie is set in outer space. In addition, the fuzzy animal that appears on his shoulder is named Fuzzball and is Captain EO’s small flying sidekick.
Michael Jackson was a legendary artist who was known all over the world. He went from being Gary, Indiana’s most talented kid to one of the most recognized human beings on that planet. Jackson was not only a great music artist, but he inspired dance moves, had his own fashion trend and raised awareness for social causes all around the world. From the Jackson 5 to his solo career, Jackson was extremely influential during this time. That being said, Jackson was often seen in many sources in the media including comics. Michael Jackson appeared in a number of comics from 1973 onward. This Amazing Heroes issue was released just after Jackson’s 1987 Album, Bad, produced the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You”, “Bad”, “The Way You Make Me Feel”, “Man in the Mirror”, and “Dirty Diana.” This was influential because it was the first album to have five number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 in the nation. Based on Jackson’s immense popularity during this time, his appearance in a comic would be very attractive to viewers, causing them to buy this issue. In addition, the discussion on Captain EO in this comic was important in order to advertise the Michael Jackson as Captain EO (Official 3-D Comic Book Adaptation of the George Lucas 3-D Musical Motion Picture) which was released in 1987. Overall, Michael Jackson’s role in pop culture in the late 1900s up to his death in 2009 has been huge and this comic is one of the many forms of media that perpetrates that he truly is “The artist of the millennium” as Britney Spears referred to him at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards.

<text> This Amazing Heroes Issue #7 cover displays labels of what the periodical contains inside, stating “Gil Kane Talks about the Micronauts!”, “The History of the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents! “Jan Duursema: A Look at a Dynamic New Talent!”, “DC Schedules 7 New Titles!”, and “Plus: New, Checklist, a Silly Cover, and More!” These headings take up the left side of the front page, and on the right, is an image depicting a large robot type creature coming out of yellow flames. The large robot appears menacing and has his arms outstretched reaching up to the sky. Below the large robot is another smaller robot, a man, and a woman. The smaller robot has his arms up as well but appears less menacing. The man is in a sci-fi looking suit and is running away from the larger robot in the back. The woman is more scantily clad, wearing an amour-type leotard, thigh-high armored boots, and armored covers on her arms. She is also wearing a mask that’s covering her eyes. She too is running away from the large robot in the back. None of the tinier characters seem to be running away in fear, more as though they are running towards somewhere. The Micronauts started off as toys produced by a Japanese company in the 1970s, which eventually would lead to comics that ran from 1979 to 1986. The 1980s was an interesting time in comics, as it saw a larger integration of international influences in comics, particularly Japan. Japanese comics had been growing for quite some time, but by the 1980s it had reached a magnitude almost comparable to America.

The growing influence of Japan in comics also led to the fostering of consumer culture, as was common practice in Japan. The Micronauts, which are featured in this periodical, are a perfect example of this, as they started off as Japanese action figures to be sold first, their comic books not even coming out until after the toys saw success in the market. This fits perfectly in American comic book distribution practices at the time, which called for sales over anything— that is to say, capitalism was reigning. International influences in comics also led to new content being explored in comics themselves, which is demonstrated in the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents comics, which is explored in this periodical as well. The mid-1970s saw a revival in the ‘superhero team’, most notably with the recreation of the X-Men in 1975. This was in large part due to the fact that society was craving international representation— society wanted diversity and inclusion to be reflected in their comics. T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents piggybacked off that idea, forming a group that was created by the United Nations and that served the good of the entire world, not just one singular country. This was after the cold world era, in which the world was looking for allies, not enemies— society wanted to be reassured that coexistence was possible. This periodical becomes interesting in the fact that it covers these topics that were very prevalent in the era— international influence, capitalism, and representation. It not only serves as a good representation of the era, but it also interacts with the time, as all art does. </text>

<text>The cover of Amazing Heroes Issue #10 displays a drawing by Terry Austin of the DC superhero group known as the Metal Men. There is a solid yellow background. The team’s leader, Gold, and the other members Mercury, Platinum, Lead, Iron, and Tin, are shown, along with the groups’ scientist creator, Doc Magnus. The robots are all standing in heroic positions, except for Tin, who is much smaller and peeks out from behind Lead’s leg. There is only one female robot, Platinum, who, unlike her teammates, has a full head of hair and wears high heels. The caption/headline states “This Issue: The History of the Metal Men,” implying that the fanzine will include a special article featuring the superhero team’s creative development in addition to descriptions of their various appearances in different comics. There is also an announcement saying that comic book creator Frank Miller will do a new series for DC comics.

The evolution of the Metal Men is reflective of changes in the comic book industry at large. The group was first created in one weekend by Robert Kanigher and Ross Andru in 1962, after another story was canceled. During this period, the comics industry was focused on creating characters that seemed like real people, with emotions and problems. The Metal Men had different personalities that often clashed, which audience found both relatable and entertaining. Platinum dealt with her unreciprocated love for Doc Magnus, conforming to depictions of female superheroes as associated with love. In the 1970s, America entered a period of social and political turmoil, and comic book companies were focused on releasing titles that were “relevant” to the issues of society. The Metal Men were a DC publication, which was the more conservative of the two big comics publishing companies, and thus did not make explicit commentary on the world’s problems. The team was funded by the US government and often went on missions at the military’s request. However, new editor Mike Sekowsky changed the tone of the series, writing stories with more dark and unexplainable supernatural elements, and the series was canceled shortly thereafter. The series dealt with the question of technology, dealing with circumstances in which science was used for both good and evil purposes. Doc Magnus, the team’s creator, wanted to give the robot’s human characteristics. However, due to the nature of Aurora Borealis at the time of their creation, the robots ended up with human emotions as well. This leads to a lot of bickering between the different characters and creates questions about whether the Metal Men should be considered robots or humans. Additionally, many of the villains that the superhero group battles, such as Chemo, are also results of technology, therefore depicting the negative side of scientific experimentation. DC’s Metal Men are important because they reflected trends in the comic book industry and questions about technological advancements.</text>

The featured pieces include: an article titled “Cowan: on the Rise,” about the up and coming comic book writer Denys Cowan and accompanied by a small image of the character Iron Fist; “Metal Men History,” picturing the superhero team engaged in battle with lead having become much larger than the other characters; “The Thing in the Swamp,” a review of the upcoming movie and an image of the film’s main character; and “Potpourri,” a new column with fun facts and quotes about comics, showing a cartoon man-eating both a sandwich and a comic book. The items that are included in each issue are “Comics Report,” “Coming Distractions,” “Comics Review,” and “Amazing Readers.” The rest of the table of contents includes the editorial, “Callooh! Callay! The Double Digit Issue Numbers Are Here to Stay!” and other pieces like “Things to Come: Swamp Thing under Martin Pasko,” “The Thunder Agents: Special Origins Page,” “Silly Cover #23 ½: Our Readers Are Sick,” “Star Wars” and “Star Hawks” comic strips, and “Advertising.” The articles do not appear in order. The bottom of the page contains staff information.

Vertigo’s Swamp Thing is representative of the comic book industry’s efforts to expand into other genres beyond superheroes. In the film based on the comic, “The Thing in the Swamp,” a woman falls in love with a monster that is part plant and part human. Both the comic and the film draw upon the horror genre, particularly taking advantage of the repulsion and fear that people experience upon seeing plant life become humanoid and/or life-like. In particular, plant horror monsters so terrify society because they blur the lines between the animate and the inanimate and have the potential to grow almost limitlessly. The comic book character was part of DC’s Vertigo line, which was directed at more mature audiences and disregarded most of the requirements of the Comics Code Authority. Many publishers were able to avoid the restrictions because buyers of comic books were increasingly becoming specialized fans rather than the average person at a newsstand. The T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents are also representative of the expansion of the industry. The T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents belonged to a small publishing company called Tower Comics, one of the many smaller companies that attempted to enter the comic book market during the 1960s. Unfortunately, it was Tower’s only successful title and the company canceled its last comic book in 1970, leading to a debate between many different publishers over the rights to the superhero team. This is reflective of the comic book industry’s focus on profit and capitalism, in addition to its ability to reuse and redevelop titles throughout the years. Several publishers attempted to take advantage of and profit from the T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, with a high of eight different titles by five different publishers being produced at the same time. Vertigo’s Swamp Thing and Tower’s T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents are important because they represent the growth of the comic book industry.</text>

<text>Page 27 of Amazing Heroes Issue #10 is the first page to an article written by J. Collier, titled “On the Rise: Denys Cowan.” The article describes comic book artist Denys Cowan’s job history, explaining how he started out drawing stick figures of Superman before actually having ever read a comic book. Once he decided that he wanted to be a comic book artist, Cowan attended the High School of Art and Design in Manhattan. For a while he alternated between working for Marvel and DC, drawing covers, extra pages, and a few stories for a wide variety of characters. Finally, he was offered a full-time job at Marvel, working on a few issues of Moon Knight before becoming the regular artist for Power Man/Iron Fist, which is what he was working on at the time of the article’s publication. The author of the article expects him to be very successful on that title and to continue rising in the industry. Cowan also expresses an interest in inking as well as penciling so that he can have more artistic control over his work. The article is accompanied by an image of a page from a Power Man/Iron Fist comic, drawn by Denys Cowan, in which the two heroes battle a mob of men wielding swords.

Denys Cowan’s run penciling Power Man/Iron Fist is reflective of the influence of movie fads on comic books and their depictions of blackness. Iron Fist, otherwise known as Danny Rand and whose appearance and name are Caucasian, was an effort to profit from the kung fu movie craze of the 1970s, while Power Man, otherwise known as Luke Cage, was a clear instance of blaxploitation. When the American audience’s fascination with the two genres died down, the characters were teamed up in an attempt to boost sales. There were positives and negatives to the pairing in regards to racial representation. The black man was not the sidekick or the villain to the white male hero but was arguably his equal. Rand’s more conservative view of justice and Cage’s radical view complemented each other, leading to an effective team. However, Luke Cage was often depicted as an angry vigilante and was associated with the prison system, both of which contributed to stereotypes about black men. Additionally, Iron Fist and Power Man began a group of superheroes called Heroes for Hire, Inc., which continued a pattern that questioned Cage’s heroic motivation. Unlike other superheroes who did their work out of altruism and a desire to help others, the Heroes for Hire worked solely for financial reimbursement. The article implies that many of Cowan’s actions, within the company and on the page, were dictated by what Marvel wanted from him, thus taking some of the culpability away from him. </text>

<text>The cover of Amazing Heroes issue 52 has the title “The European Invasion” typed out in bold, orange, capital letters. The classic Amazing Heroes text lies right at the top left corner of the comic in bold, yellow, capital letters. Right above Amazing Heroes, it denotes that the issue is no. 52, was published on August 1st, and is $1.95 in the United States and $2.50 in Canada. The background of the cover features a dark, black abyss that’s exposed by a door. The door itself is an American flag. Standing in front of the flag is Judge Dredd, who has a speech bubble that says “Okay…the door’s open! Come on in!” It’s unclear who he is talking to, as he is turned toward the black portion of the photo. His uniform is a deep navy blue, with gold plating on his knees and shoulders. On his left shoulder, the plating has an eagle on it. He has green gloves and a green belt, with a gold eagle insignia topped with a red, white, and blue badge in the middle. He has a red mask on that covers the upper portion of his face, and is holding a silvery-grey weapon that’s steaming and appears to be a gun.

Being that issue 52 is focused on the European side of comics, it’s fitting that the superhero Judge Dredd is on the cover, being created by Brits John Wagner and Pat Mills, according to his Wikia page. Mills came up with the concept behind Dredd upon request from Mills, bringing a character to life from across the pond. Many writers like Jack Kirby and Stan Lee were American, so placing a superhero created by Brits is fitting for the theme in issue 52. Though Judge Dredd himself wasn’t explicitly European, there was a whole slew of European superheroes that weren’t publicized to American readers. A list on europeisnotdead.com includes names like Superdupont from France, Gutsman from the Netherlands, Captain Berlin from Germany, and more. Including Dredd on the cover, who hails from British creators, still draws a connection between actual European superheroes and the creators behind them as well. Additionally, in the dissertation “Superhero Comics and the Popular Geopolitics of American Identity” by Mervi Miettinen, she discusses the concept of how Americaness is heavily supported in the comics industry in an idealized and mythicized manner. Noting this is important in regard to this specific issue because centering an entire comic around European comics helps break down this concept, showing that writers and superheroes themselves are equally as culturally significant. Having an American flag on the cover shows their entrance into this idealized area of comics as well. One last important element to note is the title of the comic— “The European Invasion.” This could be a reference to the mid-1960s movement called the “British Invasion,” which was all about British rock-and-roll infiltrating the United States, according to Britannica. Fans of this movement may be especially drawn to a comic that’s focused on the world on the other side of the pond as well, wanting to unearth other elements about a culture they have never lived themselves. All in all, this cover is a great segue to European superheroes and writers being popularized in America, while also drawing in fans who love the European lifestyle already.

The side panel on the left features three images with brief descriptions underneath them, denoting what they’re about. The top image features a drawing of Judge Dredd with the caption “Hero History: Andrew Littlefield looks back at the career of Judge Dredd on page 29,” the middle image features a drawing of Dargaud with the caption “Feature Article: Dwight Decker reveals the secrets behind Dargaud on page 51,” and the bottom image features a “mysterious” Marvel hero with the caption “Hero History: Frank Plowright looks at the Marvel hero you don’t know on page 43.” To the right of these photos, there’s a greyed-out section that denotes each of the articles throughout the comic, along with their page number, author, and article title. The page number appears first, then the article/subhead. Below this in finer print is a brief description of the article, and below this is where the author is named. The entire page is printed in black and white.

The Contents page is a perfect representation of what the comic you’ll be reading will contain. The headlining articles I mentioned before are crucial in shaping this page into what it is. One of the headlining articles on this page is “Hero History,” which connects with the cover and discusses the career of Judge Dredd. Advertising European writers is just as important as advertising European superheroes right from the get-go, being that only including one or the other would appear limiting— both the real writers and the heroes they create are equally important. Another headlining article is titled “Hero History,” which looks into the life an history of Captain Britain, also known as Brian Braddock. He was from Britain (fittingly). Including a preview of an article about a well-respected, popular European superhero is crucial to put on the Contents page, being that it’s probably the most representative article in the entire issue. A comic all about Europe should feature a powerful superhero that hails from Europe! Though not a featured article, another article in the comic that falls under the theme of representing Europe is one called “’Zines Across the Ocean” by Dale Coe, which focuses on British fanzines. According to the article “Fanzine Culture” by Gavin Martin, many British fanzines were tied to the punk uprising in Europe, so many fans felt the need to write about it. Translating over to comics, many fans felt the need to voice their opinions about it as well, which is a great article to feature in a comic focused on European comics. This brings the fans into the picture as well and gives them a face. Another headlining article is about Dargaud, featuring a drawing of the superhero Asterix, who’s from France. According to europecomics.com, Dargaud is one of the first and biggest French comic publishers, in which Asterix fell under. Including an article about a major European publisher brings variety into the comic, being that most readers would expect the issue would focus on European superheroes, writers, and comic artists. Discussing European publishers adds variety and gives readers a greater look into how comic publishing across the pond works. It helps make the issue “whole,” and include all parts of the comic world in Europe.

<text>This representative article in Amazing Heroes issue 52 is called “A Hero History of Captain Britain” by Frank Plowright. The article is broken up into three separate columns. The first column denotes the title and author at the top and has a vertical image of Captain Britain below it with the caption “And someone else said that they were going to storm through the streets and crush all the beetles and nothing would stop them and we should all be free.” Below this image, it says “Captain Britain by Alan Moore and Alan Davis.” In the second column, the article itself starts, and continues into the third column as well. The bottom of the page says “Rule Britannia” in all capital, serif letters. Below this in much smaller serif letters, it says “August 1, 1984,” denoting when it was published. The gist of the article is that it goes into detail about Captain Britain’s origins, history, and, essentially, why a British superhero was needed in the comic world.

“A Hero History of Captain Britain” by Frank Plowright perfectly encompasses what issue 52 of Amazing Heroes is all about— the importance of a European superhero, and how they’re just as valid as any American one. Captain Britain, also known as Brian Braddock, hailed from Essex, England himself, according to his wikia page. He was a graduate student in physics as well, and his parents were killed. The similarities between him and Superman are close in this— parents being killed, success in the occupational fields they were in. This in itself draws parallels to a lesser-known superhero to one of the most popular of all time, showing that, even though he’s British, Captain Britain is still capable of making a mark. Still relevant in this article, the dissertation “Superhero Comics and the Popular Geopolitics of American Identity” by Mervi Miettinen, discusses the concept of how Americanness is heavily supported in the comics industry in an idealized and mythicized manner. Bringing in the relevancy of Captain Britain helps break this notion down, showing that European superheroes can be idealized as well, and are just as influential in the industry. Also supporting the idea of the relevance and legitimacy of the European superhero is the journal article “Superman: The Persistence of an American Icon” by Cathy L. Ryan, which talks about the individualism and success of Superman as a superhero. Being, arguably, one of the most notable superheroes of all time due to his blatant Americanness, one could argue that Captain Britain is the epitome of Europeanness and is equally as relevant as Superman himself (and an individual article itself proves Captain Britain’s importance). The addition of an article about Captain Britain, a singular European superhero, also gives fans of European superheroes a specific figure to worship. Like the “British Invasion” article, this gives fans someone to idolize and place as the face of a “new wave” of superheroes from across the pond. Instead of doing an article featuring multiple different European superheroes, fans can focus on one specific, and “geek out” over Captain Britain (also, being British, he fits exactly in the British invasion mold).</text>

<text>The cover of Amazing Heroes issue 126 features the word “Millennium” in bold, red, capital letters. Above Amazing Heroes, it denotes that the issue is no. 126, was published on October 1st, and is $2.50 in the United States and $3.75 in Canada. It’s set in outer space, with the word placed in front of a blazing sun, sitting above Earth, which is halfway exposed. The classic Amazing Heroes text lies right at the top of the comic, above the sun. It’s shown in bold, white, capital letters, with five blue lines running from each side of it. The dark sky in the background is dotted with stars, and it’s clear that something explosive and new is about to occur. All of the colors used, besides white and black, are incredibly vibrant and contrast well against each other. This cover is a statement piece of sorts, welcoming readers into an issue that’ll expose the new, the fresh, the start of a beginning, just like the millennium itself.

The purpose of having “Millennium” on the cover in outer space is to signify a period of change and additionally introduce the new crossover series. According to Merriam-Webster, “millennium” is defined as both “a period of 1,000 years” and “a period of great happiness or human perfection.” Placing this word on the cover of the comic indicates that something great and fantastical is entering the comics world. It intrigues the reader and draws them in. Including the title of the crossover series in which most of the comic is based on is important as well. Millennium is an eight-issue miniseries written by Steve Englehart that eventually breeds heroes called the New Guardians, according to Millennium’s wiki page. Putting it on the cover advertises it well, and shows readers that it’s the focus of the comic. Additionally, it’s important to note the colors used on this cover, which serve as a huge indicator of what the comic will bring itself overall. In the article “Comics Color” through DePaul University, it notes the specific science that goes behind choosing specific colors, and how striking colors were used in early mainstream comics to convey overstated actions and the emotions of the characters. Using vibrant reds, greens, and blues contrasted with a black background on the cover conveys the excitement of the comic itself, and the saturation represents something bold and grand— like Millennium itself. Going off of the importance of the design and graphics of the cover, it’s important to note that it’s presented in outer space. In the journal article “Interrelations between Literary Time and Space in Prosaic Texts” by Nataliya Panasenko, it goes into detail about how foreshadowing can represent something important to come in actual texts. While this depiction of outer space is not textual, it DOES serve as a sort of foreshadowing, showing that something epic like space will bring in something new and fresh to the comic world— it says more than just a drawing of the Earth that’s not in space.

<text>The table of contents inside Amazing Heroes issue 126 features the word “contents” bolded in the top-right corner, in all capital letters. Below this, it denotes that it’s the 126th issue from the Amazing Heroes series, and that it was published on October 1st. Directly below this, the word “Features” runs across the page in capital letters, with an increased kerning. Below, it denotes three main articles in the issue: “The End of an Eternity, The Beginning of a…Millennium” by Andy Mangels on p. 17 (a detailing of DC’s new crossover series), “Charles Vess Interview” by Mark Askwith on p. 28 (a conversation with the artist behind ‘Warriors Three’), and “X of a Kind— Ten Naff Comics” by Frank Plowright on p. 43. Below this, there is a rectangular comic featuring different superheroes. Below the comic, the word “Departments” runs across the page in capital letters, with an increased kerning, similar to that of features. Within this subhead, it denotes “Editorial” on p. 4, “Newsline” on p. 5, “Coming Distractions” on p. 11, “First Look— Eddie Campbell’s Bacchus” on p. 36, “Doc’s Bookshelf: The South With Lies Again” on p. 59, “Comics in Review by R.A. Jones” on p. 55, “Amazing Readers” on p. 66, “Everett True” on p. 70, and “Don Rosa’s Information Center” on p. 73. The entire page is printed in black and white.

The Contents page is a perfect representation of what the comic will contain. The first headlining article presented, “The End of an Eternity, The Beginning of a…Millennium” by Andy Mangels, gives a look into the Millennium series. Including the word “Millennium” on this beginning page is important, being that, according to Merriam-Webster, the definition of the word is both “a period of great happiness or human perfection” and “a period of 1,000 years.” Both signal a serious change and lapse in time, and Amazing Heroes wants to convey that they’re starting a new era within them as well, perhaps signifying it as a new Millennium. Additionally, the wikia page for the Millennium series reveals that the series involves a Guardian and Zamaron, who visit Earth to start the newest wave of human evolution. Showing this on the Contents page helps set up that this issue doesn’t only contain a series about evolution, but could signify that Amazing Heroes is undergoing fantastic change as well— showing that issue 126 is an issue of evolution. There’s also a headlining article about Charles Vess, who was the artists behind “Warriors Three” in Marvel Fanfare. In his biography on DC’s website, it’s revealed that his award-winning works like The Book of Magic, Swamp Thing, and The Sandman from DC and Spider-Man from Marvel have granted him his fame, along with his unique style. Including an article about an artist with a distinct style that’s drawn for classic comics, on a new series he’s working on, plays into the idea of the Millennium—leaving the old behind, and bringing in the revamped, the new. Another headlining article that stood out on the Contents page was “X of a Kind—Ten Naff Comics” by Frank Plowright. Not knowing the definition behind, Oxford Dictionary defined it as “used to emphasize annoyance,” in British slang. Introducing a series of comics that are typically seen as illegitimate or irritating isn’t something that most publishers would include in their comics, but being that Amazing Heroes is trying to implement a sense of change, including an article like this, one that usually isn’t printed, brings in a new era well. It shows that they’re willing to experiment, which isn’t always seen.</text>
