<text>This issue of Amazing Heroes was released in July of 1982 and contains four featured articles, a few stories that reoccur every issue, plus some extra stories. The featured articles include “The Serpent Masters” by Goodwin and Williamson, “Star Wars in the Comics” by J. Collier, “Another Fine Mess…” by Hal Blythe & Charlie Sweet, and “History of a Thunder God” by Lou Mougin. In addition, it is noted that “Newsline” (The latest in comic news), “Coming Distractions” (July/August Checklist), “Comics Review” by Kevin C. McConnell, and “Amazing Readers” (Letters of comment) are also all included in this issue. There is also some special content that is listed including “Silly Cover #3.14,” “Opinion: Disowning the Superman Family” by Valeria Beasley, “Star Hawks: Adventure” by Gil Kane and Archie Goodwin, “Jim Korkis’s Potpourri” illustrated by Don Rosa, and “Advertising: How to Advertise, How Much it Costs, and Where this Issue’s Advertisers Are.” The bottom left square on this page lists the staff for this issue including the editor, art director, consulting editor, assistant editor, contributing writers, contributing artists, the publisher, and founding fathers. To the right of the Staff box is information about the publication of this particular issue along with information about where exactly this issue was distributed in North America.
The majority of the content in this issue has to do with science fiction-based stories such as “The Serpent Masters,” “Star Wars in the Comics,” and “Star Hawks: Adventure.” In the 1980s, science fiction ruled. The most popular movies and books of the decade were sci-fi. Some of the greatest blockbusters of the era contained cyberpunk classics such as Blade Runner, Tron, and Neuromancer. The 1980s was also the era of E.T., Star Wars, Predator, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. In addition, there were plenty of comics that focused on science fiction such as Star Wars, X-Men, etc. It is argued that the Cold War is the reason for this increase in popularity in science fiction during the 1980s. In times of crisis, it is crucial for people to find a means of escaping from reality and that escape was reading and watching films about outer space, the future, and fantasy worlds. During the Cold War era, many works focused on fending off the Soviet invasion, fighting communists, and dealing with nuclear weapons while rocking neon-colored fashion and listening to rock-and-roll. The Cold War was associated with a rise of cultural pressure to explore possible meanings of nuclear bombs. These themes are often found in Star Wars. In addition, “Cold War” is an informal term used in Star Wars to define the state of geopolitical tension between the First Order and the New Republic during the twenty-nine-year Galactic Civil War. Additionally, in 1983, Ronald Reagan initiated the Strategic Defense Initiative the he even nicknamed “Star Wars.” This program developed an anti-ballistic missile system in order to prevent missile attacks from other nations, in particular the Soviet Union. Overall, the connections between the science fiction comic articles listed in the table of contents in Amazing Heroes #13 and the happenings of the Cold War are profound during this time period.
