Description

The 117th issue of Amazing Heroes table of contents contains an overview of what is listed in the periodical. The page is printed in black and white and lists the page numbers where each article can be found. The features of this issue contain quite a few articles including “Dark Horse: A Look at the Inner Workings of 1987’s Frontrunner in the Indie Sweepstakes,” “Alpha Flight: Grounded: Why Marvel’s Canadian Super-Team Never Worked,” “Thriller from the Stars: From 3-D Movie to 3-D Comic: Captain EO,” “With this Ring I Thee Web…: David Michelinie on Spiderman’s Impending Marriage,” and “10 of a Kind: Star-Crossed Super-Heroes.” In addition, there are quite a few listings for the various Amazing Heroes departments including the Editorial Team, the Newsline, Coming Distractions, Doc’s Bookshelf, Comics in Review (focusing on Super-Hero comics in particular), Amazing Readers, and Don Rosa’s Information Center. It also contains a blurb about the cover noting that it is “Tom Yeates’s interpretation of Michael Jackson, from Eclipse Comics’ adaptation of the Walt Disney Company motion picture Captain EO. Colors and seps by Dale Crain.” Below this description is a photograph of Michael Jackson as Captain EO wearing his space outfit from the movie with his sidekick, Fuzzball, propped on his shoulder.
This table of contents emphasizes the use of celebrities in comics. “Thriller from the Stars” discusses the transition from the Disney Parks movie Captain EO to its comic version and the use of pop star, Michael Jackson, in comics. The article “10 of a Kind” discusses the integration of star-crossed superheroes working with celebrities in comics like John F. Kennedy, The Beatles, Allen Funt, Jerry Lewis, Don Rickles, Bob Haney, Jim Aparo, Murray Boltinoff, Muhammad Ali, the cast of Saturday Night Live, David Letterman, and Julius Schwartz. In the 1980s Michael Jackson released a number of famous hits including “Rock with You,” “Beat it,” “Billie Jean,” “Human Nature,” “Thriller,” and many more. He was a king and ruled the Billboard charts. Michael Jackson had an amazing career. However, it truly flourished in the 1980s. Conversely, many of the celebrities listed above did not have their greatest years in the 1980s, but in the 1960s. Muhammed Ali is known as one of the greatest boxers of all time. He had most of his successes in the 1960s. Former President John F. Kennedy was in office from January 20, 1961 through November 22, 1963. His inclusion in this article and comics reflects the fact that he had in important role in the United States during his time. He made such an impact that he was even able to appear in a Superman comic. The Beatles also released albums from 1960 through 1970. They are known as arguably the foremost and most influential music band in history. They are so popular that they even have appeared in many comics. These celebrities were so influential that they are stilled talked about in 1987 in a comics fanzine. Overall, the use of celebrities in comics are based on the fame and popularity of a celebrity. Celebrity comics are a byproduct of merchandising around a star or franchise. In essence, it grabs the reader’s attention and can make the comic more attractive to the consumer.
