Description
The Amazing Heroes issue 191 is the tenth anniversary issue. It was sold in June of 1991 and sold for $4.95 in the United States and $5.95 in Canada. The right side of the cover contains a number of comic book characters drawn by comic book extraordinaire: Brian Bolland. Below the words “Our Tenth Anniversary Issue,” there are images of Mr. Mamoulian, The Bishop from The Actress and the Bishop, Wonder Woman, Animal Man, The Joker, and Judge Dredd. The center of the cover contains a rusty, red image of a woman standing with her arms crossed over her chest as if she is lying in coffin. She is wearing a gas mask, various bracelets, rings, and has her bare-midriff showing. The left side of the cover contains information about what types of articles are included in the issue. This issue contains, “Cheers from the UK: Exclusive Brian Bolland & John Bolton interviews,” “Backstage with John Wesley Shipp, Star of ‘The Flash,’” “A 30th Anniversary Tribute to Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s classic Fantastic Four,” “The Triumphant Return of Sidney Mellon,” and “Special Feature: Hipper-Than-Thou Spy Magazine Parody (Okay, Rip-Off).” In addition, in the bottom left hand corner, it is noted, “All this, plus prodigal Sons Kevin Dooley, Dwight R. Decker, and Gerard Jones… as well as Prodigal Daughter Heidi ‘Ace’ MacDonald. Based on this, it appears that this issue contains a lot of information, especially being that it is a tenth anniversary issue.
This Amazing Heroes cover focuses on many different aspects of the issue. A big focus of this Amazing Heroes cover are Brian Bolland’s drawings of his characters and how it is noted that there is an exclusive interview with him in the issue. Brian Bolland is a British comics artist but is most famously known as a cover artist. He is one of the main Judge Dredd artists and in 1982 he produced the artwork for Camelot 3000 which was DC Comics’ first 12-issue comic book maxiseries created for the direct market. Some of his other important works include the interior art of Batman: The Killing Joke and the covers of Animal Man, The Invisibles, and Wonder Woman. He also wrote a few comic strips including Mr. Mamoulian and The Actress and the Bishop. The majority of main characters from these great works appear on the cover of this Amazing Heroes issue. Bolland was incredibly important in the United States and British Comics Industries because he won quite a few Eisner Comic Industry Awards and even wrote for Batman and Judge Dredd television series and video games.
This cover in particular is extremely important because it is a tenth anniversary issue. It celebrates many comic book triumphs over the years of the Amazing Heroes existence. Despite the advancement of technology and the disinterest in comics in the 1990s, there are still fanzines that are celebrating comics during these tough times for the comics market.
