Description
The table of contents for Issue 116 of the Amazing Heroes comic book series consists of featured articles, different departments, and the staff list on the adjacent page. The staff includes Editor Kim Thompson, Art Directors Dale Crain and Doug Erb (with some help from Michael Adams), News Correspondent J. Collier, Production Assistant Teresa Moore, Typesetting by L. M. Gorell and Ariene Easter, and Circulation by Rachel Enger. This issue was published by Fantagraphics Books, Inc. and was printed at Port Publications, WI. The featured articles are as follows: “Colon Goes for the Championship” by Ernie Colon, “Out of America” by Andy Mangels, and “Ten of a Kind” by Patrick Daniel O'Neill. There are also a large number of departments that are listed: Editorial, Perspective, Newsline, Coming Distractions, Firstlook, Doc’s Bookshelf, Comics in Review, Amazing Readers, and Don Rosa’s Information Center. In the bottom right corner of the page is a comic of the Samurai featured in the table of contents exclaiming, “I want you! – Matt Champion”. A weak old man is pictured next to this Samurai saying, “Hey! You can’t just come into this ring with them swor-” and is cut off due to the nunchucks being wrapped around his neck.
Ernie Colon was born in Puerto Rico in 1931, but was ultimately raised in the United States. In 1960, he began his career, first working for 20 years at publishing house Harvey, first as a letterer, and then as an artist for series such as Casper the Friendly Ghost, Monster in my Pocket, and Richie Rich. After Harvey went out of business, he began work as a freelancer for other comic book companies; some of these companies include DC Comics, Eclipse Comics, Valiant Comics, and Marvel Comics. He has written several graphic novels, comics, and biographies of his own, including two books on the 9/11 terrorist attacks and an Anne Frank bibliography. Besides his work on these projects, Colon was involved in drawing the cover for the Matt Champion series; only one issue actually ended up being published, though it is unclear why this was the case. Colon also did an interview discussing his project Underworld. He talks about how this project was unique because it gave DC the chance to write about something other than superheroes, and because it has a cops-and-robbers vibe to it. At DC Comics, Colon also was involved in the production of Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Blackhawks, and the Flash. At Marvel, Ernie Colon was part of the team that produced Spiderman. The editor of this issue of the Amazing Heroes series is Kim Thompson, who became editor of the comics after Michael Catron left the company to pursue other works. The comic panel depicted on this table of contents page is actually the cover page for the third Matt Champion comic issue, which ultimately went unpublished. So, even though this series only had one issue that was ultimately published, referencing this cover page was a way to tie in information about Ernie Colon that would appear later in this Amazing Heroes issue.
