Description
Released in September of 1986, this cover for Amazing Heroes Issue #102 was given the unofficial title of “Spotlight on the Dark Knight,” (thanks to a small blurb in the bottom right corner of the comic’s table of contents) and it’s easy to see why. With no side text foreshadowing what lays inside, this cover visually expresses the issue’s emphasis on all things Batman - specifically, his new upcoming series. Perhaps of unique importance is the artist of the cover, David Mazzucchelli, whose last name can be seen encompassing the bottom of the yellow spotlight.
Mazzucchelli was also the artist for the short, four-issue miniseries “Batman: Year One,” which is the lead feature interview is this issue. “Batman: Year One” was a new start for the caped-crusader, and Mazzucchelli’s bold, direct art style aided in letting viewers know they were getting a different Batman. With this opportunity to essentially reinvent Batman, Mazzucchelli sought to make “Batman: Year One” look grimier, darker, and more muted than the comic’s predecessors. All of these elements are present in this cover alone. The two primary colors are black and a muted yellow, Batman’s suit is a dirty grey accented by the washed-out yellow of his gloves and utility belt, and much of Batman’s physical form is lost in the shadow produced by the spotlight - a clear change from the bright panels and light-blue accented suit worn by some preceding Bruce Waynes. And, as a final warning call to its readers, Mazzucchelli's cover depicts the shadowy, scowl-faced Batman leaping into action and toward the reader, as if grabbing for their attention and letting them know of Batman’s impending artistic, and thus overall character, change.
